Rollins Splits Doubleheader with Mocs

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 28, 2023) – The Rollins softball team came back to win game two on Friday to salvage a doubleheader split with visiting Florida Southern. The Mocs (25-24, 12-17 SSC) won the opener, 9-7, while the Tars (30-15, 14-12 SSC) bounced back with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Florida Southern 9, Rollins 7
Kaeli Zahradnik went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI, while Jaden Walker was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Ashley Troutman finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and Ashley Worrell was 1-for-3 with a solo home run.

Emily MacMullen (16-10) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) in four innings, allowing nine hits while striking out two. Worrell gave up five runs on four hits and a walk in 0.2 innings, and Taylor Hartman pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out a pair.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • The Mocs took advantage of an error in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Third Inning
  • FSC strung together four hits in the third to score three times, extending its lead to 4-0.
  • Troutman answered back with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Fifth Inning
  • Florida Southern tacked on five in the fifth, including a grand slam, to build its lead to 9-2.
  • A Zahradnik RBI double and a sac fly from Emma Gipple in the home half plated a pair for the Tars, trimming the margin to 9-4.
Sixth Inning
  • Worrell led off the sixth with a solo home run and Walker delivered a two-run double to get the Tars within two at 9-7.
  • A flyout double play that saw Walker cut down at the plate prevented Rollins from making it a one-run game.
Seventh Inning
  • The Tars couldn't find any magic in their last at-bat, going down in order in the seventh to fall by a score of 9-7.

Game 2 – Rollins 6, Florida Southern 5
Troutman went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Walker was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Grace Germer finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Zahradnik was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.

Worrell started in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in four innings, striking out three. Avery Garbarek (2-3) came on in relief and got the victory, tossing three hitless and scoreless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. She also connected for the game-winning two-run home run in her only at-bat of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
  • The Tars utilized five hits in the second, including a two-run single from Zahradnik, to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Rollins missed an opportunity to extend the lead even further as it had the bases loaded with one out but couldn't push across any additional runs.
Third Inning
  • FSC wasted no time in answering back, scoring three runs on three hits in the third to go up 3-2.
Fourth Inning
  • The Mocs tacked on two more in the fourth to build their lead to 5-2.
  • Rollins was quick to respond as Germer singled home Troutman to make it 5-3, and two batters later, Germer scored used her speed to score from second base on a routine ground out to shortstop, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
Sixth Inning
  • Germer was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth, which brought Garbarek, who had entered the game the previous inning to pitch, to the plate for the first time.
  • Garbarek helped herself out by launching a two-run home run that was just inside the left field foul pole and just over the fence, giving the Tars a 6-5 lead.
Seventh Inning
  • Garbarek stayed in the game to finish it and tossed a clean 1-2-3 seventh inning to close the door on the 6-5 win.
