Tars Capture Third Place in SSC

Rollins defeated Embry-Riddle 4-2 on Saturday morning

BRADENTON, Fla. (April 22, 2023) - Rollins finished their SSC tournament in style, defeating the Embry-Riddle Eagles 4-2 to claim third place in the conference. The win moves Rollins to 17-6 on the season.

The Tars had a relatively easy time in doubles action with #11 Efe Comu/Luke Quaynor defeating #20 Alexis Guedy/Luke Paschal 6-1 and Mikkel Baumann/Guillermo Castaneda cruising past Michele Iftimie/Lukas Schneider by the same 6-1 final.

Rollins expanded their lead in singles play on court six where Charlie Putrino handled Paschal to the tune of 6-2, 6-2. The Eagles claimed their first point of the day on court five where Schneider outlasted Moritz Stenzer 7-5, 6-3.

Luke Quaynor, ranked #71, got the Tars one step closer to the win with a tough win on court two. The Brit took down #57 Iftimie 7-6 (1), 6-4. The Eagles kept fighting, and took their second win on number four in a three-set thriller between Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and Richard Stoiberer, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

The match was clinched for the Tars on court three when Castaneda came out on top in a tight one with Fernando Alonso. The three setter went 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in favor of the Tars.

Head Coach Jay Friedman:
"What a tournament for the boys, three really tough matches in three days. I'm really proud of the group for not complaining, not letting the fatigue, or extracuricculars get to them. Just solid focus and grit. We've come a long way this year and I look forward to taking this group to the NCAA tournament and seeing what we can do."

Rollins now has to wait until Monday night to find out when and where (and if) they will make the NCAA South Regional. The selection show is scheduled for 8:00 PM on April 24.
