WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 19, 2023) – The fifth-ranked Rollins men's lacrosse team had little difficulty with Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday night, sailing to a 17-10 road victory. The win pushes the Tars to 13-1 overall, 7-0 in conference, while the Sailfish drop to 2-11, 0-6 in SSC play.
With just one conference game remaining, the Tars are now assured of at least a share of the conference regular season crown, and they will have a chance to win it outright by completing an undefeated conference season on Saturday at Florida Tech. Regardless of Saturday's outcome, the Tars are now assured of the top seed in next week's conference tournament.
Jack Johnstone led the way with a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Mikey Berkman tallied a goal, five assists, two ground balls, and a caused turnover, while
Grant Hansen had two goals and three assist.
Justin White chipped in with three goals, an assist, and a ground ball, and
Logan Myers added three goals and a ground ball. Shahé Katchadurian (12-1) earned the win in goal, stopping nine of the 16 shots he faced in 47:18, while
Maxwell Beuck made four saves on seven shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- PBA opened the scoring at the 12:44 mark, but White quickly answered by 47 seconds later to tie the game.
- After another Sailfish goal, Johnstone netted his first of the night, with Hansen scoring just five seconds later to give Rollins a 3-2 lead.
- Palm Beach Atlantic drew even at the 2:30 mark, but Johnstone and Myers each tallied late goals to give the Tars a 5-3 advantage after one quarter.
Second Quarter
- Rollins outscoring PBA 6-1 in the second quarter, thanks to two goals each from Johnstone and Myers along with markers from Hansen and White, increasing the margin to 11-4 at the half.
Third Quarter
- Berkman scored first in the third quarter, with Palm Beach Atlantic following that with three straight goals to cut the lead to 12-7
- Johnstone answered with two goals in the span of 40 seconds and White added his third of the game with 31 seconds to go, re-building the eight-goal cushion at 15-7.
Fourth Quarter
- Peter Carden and Peter Buell, Jr. each posted goals in the fourth quarter as the Tars cruised to a 17-10 victory.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Melbourne on Saturday, Feb. 22 to take on Florida Tech in the final game of the regular season, which is set for an 11 a.m. start. A win on Saturday would secure an undefeated mark in conference play this year, and with it, the regular season conference title.
