WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 16, 2023) - Rollins and Saint Leo were finally able to get their match in, following a weather delay last Wednesday, and impending weather on Sunday. Unfortunately, the #1 nationally-ranked Lions proved to be too much for the Tars as they won 4-0.
Because of the fear of weather, the two coaches decided to move the match up to an 11 am start, and also play to a win instead of all seven points. The first point of the day went to the Lions as they took courts one and three by scores of 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.
The feature singles court saw #3 ranked Ivan Marrero of Saint Leo take on #58
Efe Comu. Marrero showed why he is one of the top players in the country, securing a 6-1, 6-0 win. Court three was the next to go with #33 Vincent Thiel defeating
Guillermo Castaneda 6-3, 6-3. The match was then clinched on court two in a fun one between #22 Martin Soukal and #68
Luke Quaynor. Soukal won with scores of 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The matches on courts 4-6 did not finish, but the Tars were battling in each of them. On line four,
Richard Stoiberer and Nicolas Bacella left with the score 6-4, 5-5. On number five,
Moritz Stenzer and Tao Castillo were in the midst of a wild one, 7-6(5), 3-6, 2-1. And on court six,
Charlie Putrino and Luis Iriartee were playing tough to a score of 4-6, 6-2, 3-4.
From Coach
Jay Friedman:
"After going down 0-3, the remaining guys fought hard and really showed what we are all about this season which is, we just don't fade away, we stand in there and keep working. In the end, they are the #1 team in the country for a reason, and we will learn and head to the conference tournament in a few days that much wiser."
Rollins will have one more home match before the aforementioned conference tourney begins. The Tars will take on Washington and Lee on Monday afternoon in Winter Park. Before the match begins, senior
Mikkel Baumann will be recognized by the athletic department for his career as a Tar. First serve is scheudled for 3:00 PM.
