WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 1, 2023) – The 13th-ranked Rollins men's lacrosse team earned its first-ever victory over the University of Tampa on Saturday night, downing the third-ranked Spartans, 12-6. With the win, the Tars go to 8-1 on the year and 2-0 in SSC play, while Tampa drops to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in conference action.
Jack Johnstone poured in a game-high five goals and grabbed two ground balls, while
Grant Hansen tallied two goals, two assists, three ground balls, and one caused turnover.
Logan Myers had two goals and an assist and
Justin White added a goal, two assists, and a ground ball. Shahé Katchadurian (7-1) made 12 saves to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Rollins wasted no time as Hansen scored just 38 seconds into the contest.
- After a Tampa goal tied it up, Johnstone netted his first of the night at the 7:49 mark of the first.
- Myers made it 3-1 with his first of the game just over five minutes later, and a Spartan goal late in the period made it a 3-2 contest after one quarter.
Second Quarter
- Hansen converted an extra-man opportunity 1:31 into the second to make it 4-2, and Johnstone followed that with his second and third goals of the game to build the lead to 6-2 with 3:57 to play in the second.
- A Tampa goal cut it to 6-3, but Johnstone found the back of the net with just eight ticks on the clock to give the Tars a 7-3 halftime lead.
Third Quarter
- Johnstone scored his fifth of the game just 2:22 into the third, and White put home the next goal to increase the lead to 9-3 with 8:49 on the clock.
- Tampa scored two late goals, with a Justin Spencer marker sandwiched in between, making it a 10-5 game heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Mikey Berkman scored the first goal of the fourth, with Myers making it a 12-5 game with under five minutes to play.
- Tampa got what would be the last goal of the game just a few seconds later, and the Tars were able to easily hang on for the 12-6 win.
