WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 8, 2023) - The Rollins Tars have no won their last five games in a row following a doubleheader sweep of Queens (NY) College on Wednesday. After winning both games in run-rule fashion, the Tars improve to 11-9 on the season.
Game One
Rollins 8
Queens 0
After starter
Emily MacMullen struck out all three batters in the top of the first, she received some offensive support in the bottom half.
Ashley Troutman led off with a triple to right, followed by a walk and a steal from
Grace Germer. Next up was
Claire Long who laid down a beautiful bunt to the pitcher to score Troutman. However, Germer never stopped moving on the play, and scored all the way from second on the bunt to make it 2-0.
Everything remained quiet in innings two, three and four. MacMullen sat down the Knights in order each time, while Rollins failed to score despite having runners in scoring position.Â
They would switch things up in the fifth and take game one early. With one out, both Troutman and Germer walked and stole bases. On the next play, Long slapped a ball to second, but the fielder tried to gun the speedy Troutman at home to no avail. Two batters later,
Jaden Walker hit a ball to right that was a foot short of being a home run. The double plated Germer and Long to make it 5-0.Â
The sixth run of the game came during the next at bat when a simple throw back from catcher to pitcher sailed over the pitcher's head, allowing
Taylor Waters to score.
Sarah Young delivered a sac fly rBI, followed by a dropped ball in center field that allowed
Brie Michelli to score the eighth and win game-winning run.
MacMullen was flawless in her effort on the circle, retiring all fifteen batters she faced. This is after she was credited with a six-inning no-hitter against Chestnut Hill on Monday, giving her 11 straight no-hit innings.Â
The offense only had three hits on the day, but they were all for extra bases. The Tars walked seven times in the game and also stole seven bags.
Game Two
Rollins 8
Queens 0
The second half of the double dip provided a little more drama early on as the Knights loaded the bases in the first against starter
Taylor Hartman. However, she was able to escape the jam unscathed with a strikeout and a groundout to third.Â
Troutman once again sparked the offense in the first with a bunt single and a steal. Germer added a single and a steal as well to put two in scoring position.
Claire Long grounded out to bring in Troutman, followed by a Waters double that plated Germer.
Again the Knights loaded the bases in the third, and again Hartman pitched through it. A pair of weak groundballs snuffed out the Knights' chances of scoring.
Rollins added a third run in the third when Germer stole third, and came home on the same play when the catcher's throw sailed into left field. Â
Jaden Walker led off the fourth with an absolute bomb to center field. Moments later, with two on, Troutman chopped a ball over the third baseman's head to score both
Kaeli Zahradnik and
Morgan Lebeda, making it 6-0.
The game ended early once again when Rollins got their final two runs in the sixth.
Emily Witt pinch hit and walked. She then moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. After Young walked and stole second, a base hit from
Tori Pagan knocked in Witt. The next batter was Troutman, who looped a fly ball into right to score Young, ending the game 8-0 once again.
Troutman went 3-4 in game two with three RBI and a run scored. She also stole a base. Hartman was solid in the circle with six innings of scoreless pitching, zero walks and four strikeouts.Â
Next up for the Tars is their third doubleheader of the week. Rollins will host Post University on Friday, March 10 with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:00 PM at MLK Park.
