Rollins Drops Series Opener to No. 2 Tampa

A late comeback came up short on Friday night

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 31, 2023) – The Rollins softball team made a late push, but ultimately came up short in a 4-2 loss to No. 2 Tampa on Friday night. With the defeat, the Tars fall to 23-12 overall, 7-9 in SSC play, while the Spartans go to 24-2, 12-1 in conference games.

Claire Long was 3-for-3 with a run scored while Jaden Walker went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run. Emily MacMullen (13-8) took the complete game loss, giving up four runs on just three hits, walking one and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • The Spartans sent eight batters to the plate in the third, using two hits, a hit batter, and an error to push across three runs, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Sixth Inning
  • Tampa tacked on another run in the sixth on an error, increasing its lead to 4-0.
Seventh Inning
  • Rollins made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, with Long leading off with a base hit.
  • Walker then launched a two-run home run to center field, trimming the deficit to 4-2.
  • Two batters later, Kaeli Zahradnik ripped a one-out single, forcing Tampa to change pitchers.
  • With two outs, Ashley Troutman delivered a single to left, putting the potential tying run on base.
  • Unfortunately for the Tars, Tampa was able to record the final out before any more runs came across, securing the Spartans' 4-2 win.
