WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 1, 2023) - Tampa showed why they are one of the top teams in the country, sweeping a doubleheader against Rollins on Saturday. The losses drop Rollins to 23-14 on the year, and 7-11 in SSC play.
Game One
Tampa 10
Rollins 4
Tampa got on the board early, taking advantage of three walks, two wild pitches, and adding two hits to go up 3-0. Rollins chipped away in their at bat in the bottom half, however. With one out,
Grace Germer doubled off the wall in left, and was brought in on an RBI single from
Claire Long to make it a 3-1 game.
Four more walks from the Tars led to a fourth run for Tampa in the second. However, Rollins gave the Spartans a taste of their own medicine in the next at bat.
Emma Gipple drew a walk, followed by a
Kaeli Zahradnik single to put two on for
Ashley Troutman. The leadoff hitter went above and beyond in her duties, smashing a three-run homer over the left field fence to tie the game at four.
Unfortunately, that would be the end of the scoring for Rollins as reliever Gwen McGinnis shutout the Tar for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, Tampa added six more runs to make the final of 10-4.
Troutman led the offense in game one with two hits, a run and three RBI.
Game Two
Tampa 11
Rollins 0
The Spartans controlled the outcome of game two from the jump, scoring early and keeping the Tars off the board. Starter Kate DeSimone was incredibly effective for Tampa, tossing six innings of shutout ball while allowing only three hits and walking none.
Next up for Rollins is a SSC series with Eckerd. They will play at 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 6, followed by a doubleheader on Friday, April 7 at noon and 2:00 pm.
