Comeback Falls Short in Loss

Lynn defeated Rollins 9-6 on Friday evening

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 3, 2023) - A rocky start proved too much to overcome as Rollins fell against SSC foe Lyn by a score of 9-6 on Friday evening. Rollins now stands at 6-8 on the year, with a 2-5 record in SSC play.

Rollins looked ot be in decent shape in the first when Emily MacMullen struck out a Lynn batter, but the ball got away from backstop Claire Long, giving the Fighting Knights an extra life. They took advantage, scoring six runs on a variety of hits, walks, a hit batter, and an error. The Tars got one run back in the bottom half when leadoff hitter Ashley Troutman obliterated the first pitch she saw over the left field fence.

MacMullen retired the next six Lynn batters, and Rollins was able to stage a comeback in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Troutman and Grace Germer reached base, and moved into scoring position on a double steal. A lazy fly ball to left looked to be the end of the inning, but it was dropped, allowing both Tars to score. A walk and a single brought Brie Michelli to the plate and she delivered a ground ball through the right side to score two more runs, making it a 6-5 ballgame.

Innings four, five, and six were scoreless on both ends. In the final frame, Lynn extended their lead to 9-5 when pitcher Josey Sumpter hit a two-out, two-run home run. Rollins got one run back in the bottom half on a Jaden Walker single, but the final batter went down on strikes with the bases loaded to end the game at 9-6.

Troutman got on base three times on two hits and a walk, and also scored twice. Michelli added two hits as well. MacMullen had five strikeouts in the loss for Rollins.

The two teams will wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader that starts at 1:00 PM.
