Mocs Outlast Tars

Florida Southern defeated Rollins 9-5 on Tuesday night

Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 28, 2023) - Rollins had their modest three-game win streak snapped on Tuesday as they fell to the Florida Southern Mocs by a score of 9-5. Rollins now stands at 20-8 on the season.

The Mocs were the first to strike when leadoff man Ryan Magdic hit a laser off the storage building beyond right field. They would add second run in the inning on an RBI single. Starter Ryan Furey was able to escape further damage by leaving the bases loaded. He was then helped out in the bottom half when Ryan Coleman launched a ball off the scoreboard, plating himself and Joey Rubin to knot the score at two.

Southern scored again in the second to take a 3-2 lead thanks to two-out RBI double from Drew Cavanaugh. The Tars had a chance to tie it again, but Jimmy Thies was left stranded on third after hitting a double and moving up on a fly out.

After a quiet third, both teams left a runner in scoring position in the fourth, keeping the score 3-2 in favor of Southern.

The Mocs created even more separation in the top of the sixth after a Rollins pitching change. With one out, they went single, walk, single, single to score two more times and make the score 5-2. With two on and two out, Spencer Mangum was called on to put out the fire, which he did by inducing a pop out on his first pitch out of the pen.

Rollins was given a golden opportunity in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Adams Torres came through in the clutch against reliever Kerry Wright, smashing a single into center that scored both Thies and Spencer Sarringar. One pitch later, Jeslyn Whitehead punched a ground ball through the right side that brought it Rubin to tie things up at five.

The momentum was short lived as the Mocs struck back in the eighth. With one out, Magdic smacked a grounder to second that caromed off Torres, putting the runner on second base. The next batter blooped a single into left, putting runners on the corners. The next three hitters went single, single, double to score four runs and make it 9-5. Rollins showed life in the bottom half, putting men on the corners, but couldn't push a run across.

Torres had two hits and two RBI to lead the offense. Coleman added two RBI on his home run.

Next up for Rollins is a huge road weekend series with the #2 Tampa Spartans. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
