Box Score MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 17, 2023) - Rollins picked up a big SSC win in their series opener against Florida Tech on Friday, taking the game 8-3. The win moves Rollins to 16-6 on the year, with a 6-1 record in SSC play.
After a scoreless first, the Tars blew the game open early in the second.
Jack Herring led off with a walk, and was brought in on a monster home run from
Parker Smith.
Spencer Sarringar then singled and came around on an
Adams Torres single.
Jeslyn Whitehead then wrapped things up with a sac fly that plated
Joey Rubin tomake it 4-0.
Tech got one back in the bottom half on a solo home run, the only blemish on the day for starter
Edward Berry.
It took three innings, but
Cameron Meehan then retaliated for the Tars with a solo shot of his own to make the score 5-1 in the fifth. That wa splenty of support for Berry, who was locked in. He did run into one jam in the sixth with two one and one out, but induced weak contact on the next two hitters to escape unscathed.
Rollins added three runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles from Whitehead and
Ryan Coleman. The ninth and final run came in the ninth on a Rubin single that scored
Jimmy Thies.
Berry earned the win with a quality start. He tossed seven innings, scattered five hts, allowed one run, and struck out six.
Game two of the series will take place Saturday at 7:00 PM in Melbourne.
