WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2023) - Two days after having their eleven-game win streak snapped, the Rollins Tars are back in the win column following a 7-0 sweep of the visiting Washburn Ichabods on Thursday. Rollins now stands at 12-2 on the year.
The first point of the day was dramatic. Washburn took the first doubles match on court two, but Rollins evened things up with a 6-3 win on court eon from
Efe Comu/
Luke Quaynor. That put all eyes on the court three where
Richard Stoiberer/
Charlie Putrino III outlasted their opponents by a score of 7-5.
On the singles courts, it was all Tars. Quaynor led the scoring with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sweep from second position. Next up was Putrino, who handled court six with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Rollins then clinched the match on court five following a 6-3, 6-2 win from
Moritz Stenzer.
Guillermo Castaneda and Stoiberer each won their matches on courts three and four, respectively. That left the featured court on number one in a fantastic matchup between Comu and #57 Tim Hammes. It was Hammes taking set one with a 6-3 win, but Comu would not go down without a fight. The second set went to a tiebreaker with Comu coming out on top, 7-6 (3). The final set also went to the home side as Comu outlasted Hammes 10-5.
"I'm really proud of these guys today to bounce back and defend the ship," stated head coach
Jay Friedman. "Chuck and Richie played really gritty in doubles. Then in singles, we just came out with something to prove. I'm really proud of this group, and Efe especially for a quality win against a very good player at the top spot."
After playing nine games in the last 17 days, Rollins will take nearly two weeks off before ramping into conference play on March 29th against Embry-Riddle.
