ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (March 15 2023) - The Rollins Tars suffered a mid-week loss against Flagler on Wednesday, falling in a high-scoring affair ,16-9. Rollins now stands at 15-6 on the year, while the Saints improve to 5-17.
Rollins got off to a great start, scoring four runs in the top of the first.
Joey Rubin led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. After a one-out walk to
Jorge Ramirez,
Cameron Meehan launched his fifth home run of the year to right field. Rollins wrapped up the inning with a
Spencer Sarringar RBI single that scored
Ryan Coleman.
Flagler got one run back in the bottom half, but the Tars responded with a run of their own when Ramirez drove in Rubin with a groundout.
The Saints crossed the plate three times in the fourth inning to make it a one-run game. It took an extra inning this time, but Rollins was once again able to respond with a run of their own in the sixth when Rubin drove in
Drew Howard.
The bottom half of the inning saw another rally from the home team as Flagler put together three runs, chasing starter
Ryan Furey from the game They led 7-6 after six.
Once more, Rollins staged retaliation. In the top of the seventh,
Jimmy Thies tripled with two outs, and came home on a
Parker Smith triple. The next batter was Sarringar, whose double to left center plated Smith to make it 8-7.
The bottom of the seventh saw Flagler put three runs across the board on four hits, a walk, and a sac bunt.
Rollins made things interesting in the top of the eighth with an RBI single from
Jack Herring, pulling within 10-9. However, Flagler teed off in the eighth, scoring six more times on four hits, two walks, two hit batsmen, and a Rollins error to make the final of 16-9.
The Tars had 13 hits in the loss, led by Rubin's four. He also scored three times and added a steal.
Next up for Rollins is a SSC series on the road at Florida Tech. First pitch will be Friday, March 17 at 2:00 PM in Melbourne.
