Warriors Snap Tars Win Streak

#13 Wayne State defeated #19 Rollins 4-3 on Tuesday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2023) - Men's tennis hit a bump in the road, snapping their eleven-game win streak at the hands of the #13 ranked Wayne State Warriors. Rollins, currently ranked #19 in the country, falls to 11-2 while Wayne State moves to 10-7.

Wayne State struck first with the doubles point by taking courts two and three. Both matches needed a 7-5 final to secure the win. On court one, Efe Comu/Luke Quaynor were victorious 6-3.

Quaynor knotted the score up on singles two with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win. Then it was the Warriors setting themselves up for success with wins on number five and number one.

The Tars did not go down easy. Freshman Richard Stoiberer kept his guys in the game with a solid 6-4, 6-2 effort on court four. Then, on court three, Guillermo Castaneda collected a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory. With the match knotted at three points each, all eyes turned to court six.

Baumann struck first, winning the first set 6-4. He and Denali Kitayama then went blow for blow in the second round, with the Warrior coming out on top in a close one, 7-6 (4). The pressure was on in set three as everyone crowded the court to cheer on their guys. In the end, it was Kitiyama squeaking by with a 6-4 win in the final set to secure the win.

"Wow, that was was a tough match," exclaimed head coach Jay Friedman. "We played really gritty in the doubles after being down a couple of breaks, but ultimately Wayne State just was more aggressive on the key points. We matched up very well with them and hats off to them for making the most of the opportunity at line six today in a pressure filled moment. We look ahead to Thursday for another huge opportunity on our racquets."

Rollins will play host for the tenth straight match as they take on Washburn University. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Thursday, March 16th.
