Tars Plundered by Buccaneers

Barry defeated Rollins 88-78 on Saturday afternoon

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 4, 2023) - It just wasn't the Tars night on Saturday as they fell at ome against the Barry Buccaneers, 88-78. With the loss, Rollins now stands at 11-11 on the year with a 7-7 record in the SSC. Barry improves to 8-11, (4-10 SSC).

The game started off evenly matched as both teams traded early blows. Hutton Yenor paced the Tars early with five quick points, with Matheus Silveira and Sergey Grishaev each chipping in four. Grishaev's second bucket put the Tars up by five, but Barry quickly came back after a media timeout. Nick Anderson scored twice in twenty-four seconds to give Barry a 21-19 lead halfway through the first. The teams then tied at 21, 24, and 26. Jaron Williams then became the hot hand for Barry, knocking down a pair of threes. The Buccaneer lead grew as high as twelve in the first half as the Tars went cold in the final minutes. John Latimer converted an and-one at the buzzer to cut into the lead, but at the break Barry led 44-35.

The second half started on a script that favored the Bucs. Two Yenor free throws opened the scoring, followed by a three from Anderson. Then it was two more free throws for Yenor, and a second three for Anderson. On possession three, Silveira cashed twice from the charity stripe, followed by a third Anderson triple. The fourth time around, Silveira converted a tough shot in the paint for two points before Anderson nailed his patented shot from distance.

There was a lull in action between the 13 and 10 minute marks as neither team did much on offense. The Bucs were able to grow their lead to 73-55 with just under nine minutes to play. Cade Long led a vicious rally for the Tars to bring them back into the game. Rollins went on a 11-0 run, with Long supplying nine of the points on a variety of jumpers, drives, and free throws. Rollins would cut the lead all the way down to 77-72 on a Yenor jumper with four minutes to go. Unfortunately, Barry was able to capitalize from the free throw line as Rollins was forced to foul in the final minutes. Shots just didn't seem to fall for the Tars, as they only made one field goal in the final 80 seconds. Eventually, Barry came out on top 88-78.

Yenor led the offense with 23 points (12-12 FT) along with five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Silveira added twenty points and six boards, and Long scored 17 points with four assists. Rollins was a perfect 25-25 from the line, but only 3-23 from three-point range.

Next up for the Tars is a road matchup with the Florida Southern Mocs on Wednesday, February 8. Tipoff will happen after the women's game, which starts at 5:30 pm.
