Tars Finish Sweep of Sharks with Another Shutout

Four pitchers combined to shut out Nova Southeastern for the second straight day

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2023) – For the second straight day, Rollins pitchers combined for a complete game shutout of visiting Nova Southeastern, giving the Tars a 3-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the Sharks. The win lifts the Tars to 7-3 this season and 3-0 in SSC play, while NSU falls to 3-9 overall, 0-3 in conference games.

Adams Torres went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI, while Jimmy Thies was 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Kieran Casey started for Rollins, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out six in 3.1 innings of work. Spencer Mangum (1-0) got the win, going 1.2 scoreless innings with one hit and one walk allowed while striking out one. Alfredo Caraballo notched his second save of the season, pitching the final two innings with just one hit allowed and one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
  • The Tars left men on base in each of the first four innings, but in the fifth they finally cashed in.
  • Axel Post led off with a single and he was promptly replaced by Jack Herring as a pinch runner.
  • After taking second on balk, Herring moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Joey Rubin.
  • Torres then ripped a double down the left field line to score Herring with the game's first run.
Seventh Inning
  • Torres led off the seventh with a base hit and Jeslyn Whitehead followed with a single of his own, moving Torres to second.
  • After a Jorge Ramirez flyout allowed Torres to move up 90 feet, Ryan Coleman delivered a sacrifice fly to score Torres, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Eighth Inning
  • The Tars got another insurance run in the eighth when Theis launched his first collegiate home run over the left field wall.
Ninth Inning
  • Caraballo made quick work of the Sharks in the ninth, needing just four pitches to retire the side and secure his second save.
