Tars Race Past Greyhounds

Rollins defeated Assumption 20-3 on Tuesday evening

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2023) – Rollins started their Baseball Week off on the right foot with a 20-3 win over the visiting Assumption Greyhounds. The win moves Rollins to 8-3 on the season.

It started early for the Tars with a two-out rally in the first. Jeslyn Whitehead shot a triple down the right field line, and was brought in on a  double from Jorge Ramirez. The next batter was Ryan Coleman, who sent an absolute moonshot high over the right field fence to make it a 3-0 game.

Rollins blew things open in the second inning, scoring six run on only two hits. They were helped by three hit batters and a couple of walks from the Assumption staff. The hits were impactful, with two runs coming in on a Joey Rubin single, and two more on a Coleman double off the rightfield wall. By the end of the marathon, Rollins was up 9-0.

In the fourth, Coleman singled with two outs and brought in on a Cameron Meehan triple. Meehan then scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-0.

The fifth inning saw Assumption score in the top half to avoid the shutout. Rollins was quick to get the run back in the bottom half, when Drew Howard scored on a dropped fly ball. The Tars also added one in the sixth when a Jack Herring triple drove in Kyle Bullock.

It was another big inning in the bottom of the seventh as the Tars piled it on. Five hits were recorded, including RBI singles from Coleman, Bullock, and Mason Wilson. For Wilson, it was is first career hit and RBI. Rollins scored five total runs in the inning to make it 18-1.

Both coaches cleared their benches in the late innings, with both sides scoring late to make a final of 20-3.

Coleman powered the offense with four hits on the day, totaling eight bases, scoring four times, and driving in five. In total, eleven Tars recorded at least one hit on the day. Rollins totaled 28 bases in eight innings of offense, and also drew ten walks.

Ryan Furey was solid, earning his first collegiate win with five innings, four hits, one run, and two strikeouts.

Rollins will be back in action Wednesday, March 1 against Findlay at home. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
