Rollins Clinches Series Win with 11-0 Victory

Three pitchers combine for a shutout as the Tars use eight hits and 10 walks to score 11 runs on Saturday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2023) – The Rollins baseball team put on a show offensively and got some stellar pitching from three different pitchers to blow out the visiting Nova Southeastern Sharks on Saturday, 11-0. The win clinches the series for the Tars and improves their record to 6-3 overall, 2-0 in SSC play, while NSU drops to 3-8, 0-2 in conference games.

Parker Smith went 1-for-3 with a home run, walk, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Ryan Coleman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Jeslyn Whitehead finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, and Joey Rubin was 0-for-1 with four walks, a stolen base, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Nick Berger started for Rollins, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with two hits and three walks allowed while striking out four. Ryan Murphy (1-0) got the win, pitching 3.1 scoreless inning with just one hit and one walk allowed, striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
  • Cameron Meehan opened the second with a five-pitch walk, and two batters later Smith drove him in with a long home run to left field, his fourth of the season.
  • Rubin drew a two-out walk, then advanced from first to third on a wild pitch, and came home to score on a passed ball, making it 3-0.
Fifth Inning
  • Rubin led off the fifth by working a walk and then stealing second base.
  • Adams Torres followed with a four-pitch walk, and Whitehead made the walks pay, singling home Rubin to give Rollins a 4-0 lead.
  • After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Coleman delivered a single through the drawn-in infield to score both Whitehead and Torres.
  • A Jimmy Thies sacrifice fly scored Coleman to build the lead to 7-0.
Sixth Inning
  • The Tars took advantage of a pair of Shark errors in the sixth, eventually scoring a run on a fielder's choice to make it an 8-0 game.
Seventh Inning
  • Coleman kicked things off in the seventh with a bloop single to center field, and after one-out walks to Thies and Smith, the bases were loaded.
  • Rubin coaxed a two-out walk to score Coleman, and Drew Howard followed that with a soft single to right to score Smith and Thies, lifting the lead to 11-0.
Ninth Inning
  • Jaxon Mills came on to pitch the ninth and worked around a one-out single to preserve the shutout, closing the door on the 11-0 win.
