Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. (February, 18, 2023) - The Rollins Tars picked up a much-needed series win over the visiting Quincy Hawks, defeating the #17 team 9-3 on Saturday afternoon. Rollins now stands at 4-3 overall.
After dropping the first game 11-7 on Thursday, Rollins bounced back with a big 9-3 win on Friday. Saturday played to a similar script with the Tars jumping out early, and ending with a six-run win.
Joey Rubin got things started with a single, and moved to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on an
Adams Torres single, and was brought home on a grounder from
Jeslyn Whitehead to put Rollins up 1-0. In the second, Rollins would add a second run when
Jimmy Thies knocked in
Cameron Meehan (who tripled) with a groundout.
Neither team scored in the third, but Rollins padded their lead in the fourth. Thies led off with a walk, and was sacrificed to second on a bunt. Rubin brought him in with a single to center, and Torres followed suit with a single to left that plated Rubin to make it 4-0.
Nick Berger, the Tars' starter, had his day wrap up after four shutout innings that included three hits and two strikeouts.
Quincy, who was averaging more than nine runs per game heading into this game, were once again silent in the fifth. The Tars, however, were not. With one out,
Jorge Ramirez was hit by a pitch. Meehan and Thies each followed with singles to load the bases for Aiden Healy. The redshirt freshman made the most of his opportunity, scorching a double down the left field line for a bases-clearing double, giving Rollins a 7-0 lead.
The Hawks managed to push across three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but
Alfredo Caraballo was able to come in and limit any further damage. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Rollins got two runs back on a Ramirez single that brought in
Jeslyn Whitehead and
Drew Howard to make the final of 9-3.
Rollins put together twelve hits in this one, including two each from Rubin, Torres,
Ryan Coleman and Meehan. Whitehead had his six-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-4 day at the plate, though he did score once and drive in one.
The Tars will take the week to rest up before hosting the Nova Southeastern Sharks next weekend in their first SSC series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5:00 PM at Alfond Stadium.
