WINTER PARK, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2023) – The 10th-ranked Rollins baseball team kicked off its 2023 season with a 4-1 victory over visiting Florida Tech in a non-conference game at Alfond Stadium on Wednesday night. The Tars move to 1-0 on the year, while the Panthers drop to 0-1.
Adams Torres went 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Jeslyn Whitehead was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI.
Edward Berry got the start and went three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two.
Nick Berger (1-0) got the win, tossing two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits to go along with one strikeout.
Sam Schner was 2-for-5 with an RBI for Florida Tech, while Brett Parish was also 2-for-5. Mitch Harding (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
- Jack Herring opened the bottom of the fifth with a base hit up the middle, and Jimmy Thies followed with a bunt single to put two on with no outs.
- Spencer Sarringer then worked a walk to load the bases, forcing a pitching change for the Panthers.
- Joey Rubin got the Tars on the board with an RBI groundout that scored Herring, and Cameron Meehan made it 2-0 with a single to left to score Thies.
- Torres then lined a base hit to right-center, scoring Sarringer, and Whitehead capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice bunt to build the lead to 4-0.
Ninth Inning
- Rollins' pitching staff kept the Panthers in check almost all night, with Florida Tech plating its only run with one out in the ninth inning.
- Austin Long finished the game by inducing a popout to short with the bases loaded and the potential tying run on base, sealing the 4-1 win.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Saint Leo next Tuesday, Feb. 7, for another non-conference contest against an SSC foe. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
