Tars Lose Head-to-Head Battle with Rams

#20 Angelo State defeated Rollins 70-55 on Sunday afternoon

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (December 17, 2023) - A slow-shooting start proved too much to overcome as Rollins fell against #20 Angelo State at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Sunday. With the loss, the Tars fall to 3-6 on the year, while the Rams improve to 9-1.

Matheuw Silveira put Rollins on the board early with a free throw, and then gave them their only lead of the game on a nice finish in the paint moments later. Kyle Marion added a pair makes, keeping the Tars in the game as they trailed 12-7 at the first media timeout.

Unfortunately, the offense would run stagnant coming out of the break as Rollins went on a scoreless streak of nearly six minutes as nothing managed to fall for the Tars. Marion would snap the cole streak with a steal and layup at the 8:30 mark, but the lead had ballooned to 15 at that point, 25-10.

Rollins managed only two more made shots in the final 6:25 of the first half as they headed into the break trailing 40-19. The Tars shot 8-23 (35%) in the first half, while the Rams countered with 15-32 (47%).

The second half was a complete 180 from the first half, with the Tars finding their stroke and also tightening up on defense. Marion scored the first four points of the half, and the Tars outscored the Rams 8-7 before the first media timeout.

Angelo State caught fire coming out of the break, and were able to maintain a 20+ point lead for most of the half. The Rollins defense was impressive t end the day, as they held the Rams without a point for the final 3:43 of the game. Meanwhile, they scored five points in the last minute to make the final of 70-55.

Turnovers were a killer for the Tars, as they committed 21 of them against the stout Rams' defense. Marion ended the day with 20 points on an efficient 9-16 from the floor while adding five rebounds. Silveira chipped in 10 and six as well. Angelo State had four players in double figures, led by Keyshawn Embery-Simpson's 19.

Rollins will play again tomorrow on the final day of the Shootout. Tipoff against Montana State - Billings is scheduled for 3:00 pm from the Oean Center in Daytona.
