Tars Cruise Past Royals

Rollins defeated Warner 70-53 on Tuesday evening

WINTER PARK, Fla. (December 12, 2023) - Women's basketball picked up their fourth consecutive win on Tuesday with a 70-53 effort against NAIA Warner University. the Tars now stand at 5-3 on the year. 

The Rollins defense has been phenomenal during this win streak, and Tuesday was no different. They held the Royals scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, and outscored Warner 24-9 in the first quarter. they jumped out to a 10-0 lead with freshman Faith Newton chipping in four quick ones. Erin Leigh would add six of her own, followed by six from Emily McIntosh as well on two threes.

Warner opened the second with a 5-0 run, by two free throws from Leigh snapped the streak. Still, the Royals persisted and pulled within nine points at 28-19. Newton would step up though, knocking down a triple and mid-range jumper to help maintain the advantage for Rollins. McIntosh would add her third three of the game, and Leigh would put a bow on the quarter with layup in the final minute to give the Tars a 41-24 lead at the break. 

The Royals managed just 30% shooting in the first half, while the Tars were scoring at a 41% clip. 

Rollins was a tad sluggish coming out of the half, allowing Warner to get within ten at 43-33. A Leigh jumper, followed by threes from McIntosh and Grace Alfieri, would push the lead back a more comfortable 51-35 with five minutes to go in the period. Leigh would add five more points in the latter half of the frame, and help the Tars to a 60-39 lead through three. 

Rollins played a patient game in the fourth, working the clock as much as possible while waiting for quality shots, mostly in the paint. Coupled with their still impressive defense, it led to smooth sailing on their way to a 70-53 win.

Leigh led the offense with 19 points on 8-13 shooting with four rebounds and two assists. McIntosh chipped n a season-high 14, and also snared five rebounds. Newton, Maddie Dillinger, and Alfieri each scored nine. Jasmine Edwards was the top scorer for Warner with 18 points and seven boards. 

The Tars will suit up once more before break. They will host Flagler on Friday, December 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm in Warden Arena.
