WINTER PARK, Fla. (Nov. 24, 2023) – The Rollins women's basketball team came up short on Friday afternoon against visiting Belmont Abbey in the first day of the Rollins Classic, falling to the Crusaders by a score of 60-46. The Tars drop to 1-2 on the year, while Belmont Abbey goes to 3-1.
Kaitlyn Sanders led the Tars with 11 points, shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range, while
Maddie Dillinger chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez collected a team-leading eight rebounds and
Erin Leigh tallied a game-high five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Belmont Abbey scored on its opening possession, but Rollins answered back with a three from Ajalon Gillard to go up 3-2 in the opening minute.
- A 5-0 run for the Crusaders gave them a 9-6 lead, and an 8-0 burst pushed the advantage to 17-9 with three minutes on the clock.
- The Tars chipped away, cutting the deficit to four points (20-16) on a Sanders jumper in the final seconds.
Second Quarter
- Both offenses went cold in the second quarter, combining to go 8-for-30 from the field and 0-for-4 from the charity stripe.
- A Claire Erickson three got Rollins within three at 22-19 at the 6:14 mark, but Belmont Abbey stretched the margin back up to eight, leading 31-23 at the half.
Third Quarter
- The Crusaders increased their lead to double-digits in the third quarter, but the Tars closed the period on a 4-0 run to get back within six at 47-41.
Fourth Quarter
- Rollins struggled from the field in the final 10 minutes, connecting on just two field goals out of 11 attempts as Belmont Abbey held on for the 60-46 win.

The Tars will be back in action tomorrow on the final day of the Rollins Classic as they host Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m.
