Rollins Falls to Winston-Salem State

A fourth-quarter comeback came up short for the Tars on Saturday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Nov. 25, 2023) – The Rollins women's basketball team couldn't complete a fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday, falling to Winston-Salem State on the final day of the Rollins Classic, 65-55. The Tars are now 1-3 on the season, while the Rams improve to 4-3.
 
Claire Erickson led the Tars with 17 points and added four rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal. Faith Newton pulled down game-high 12 rebounds and Caroline Swartz dished out a team-high four assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • After falling behind 3-2, the Tars got a driving layup from Claire Erickson and a layup from Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez to go up by a score of 6-3.
  • The Rams tied it on a three 90 seconds later, but a layup from Faith Newton put the Tars back in front, 8-6, with 5:38 left in the opening quarter.
  • Winston-Salem State closed out the period on an 11-4 run to take a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Second Quarter
  • The Rams scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to build a 27-12 advantage before a triple from Emily McIntosh broke the scoreless drought with 2:43 left in the half.
  • Another three from McIntosh with 37 seconds left accounted for the only other scoring for Rollins in the period as Winston-Salem State took a 30-18 lead into the halftime break.
Third Quarter
  • A 4-0 run for the Tars got the home team back to within 10 points at 36-26 with 6:43 on the clock, but the Rams kept the margin in double-figures throughout the period, ending the third quarter with a 51-39 lead.
Fourth Quarter
  • Rollins scored the first five points of the final quarter, trimming the deficit to 51-44 with 8:34 left.
  • After Winston-Salem State regained a 13-point lead, Erickson knocked down back-to-back threes to make it a 59-52 game with 2:36 on the clock.
  • The Rams were able to make free throws down the stretch and keep the Tars at bay, winning the game by a score of 65-55.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will be back on the court on Wednesday, Nov. 29, as they travel to Melbourne for the SSC opener at Florida Tech. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
