WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 6, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team closed out the Rollins Invitational on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches to finish the tournament with a 1-3 mark. The Tars started the day with a dominant 3-0 win (25-18, 25-20, 25-21) over Belmont Abbey before falling in three sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-18) to Spring Hill to end the weekend. With the results, the Tars now stand at 2-6 on the season.
Following the tournament,
Lana Gerard was named to the All-Tournament team, after totaling 60 kills, 41 digs, nine blocks, and five service aces during the event.
RC 3, BAC 0
Gerard led all players with 12 kills and added a team-high nine digs, four blocks, and a pair of service aces, while
Emma Begley chipped in with six kills and a match-high eight blocks (one solo).
Milla Sherman added a career-high six blocks and
Makayla Moran tallied five blocks (one solo) as the Tars racked up 14 blocks in the win.
Natalie Horsley dished out 24 assists to go along with five digs as Rollins outhit Belmont Abbey .181 to .021.
Ruby Foster led the Crusaders (0-7) with nine kills while Jada Foster added eight kills and a team-high three service aces. Caitlyn Faber racked up a team-leading 21 assists and Zoe Schuberth led all players with 20 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins used a 6-1 spurt midway through the first set to take control with a 16-9 lead.
- After Belmont Abbey got back to within three (17-14), the Tars rattled off five of the next six points to go up 22-15.
- A few points later, Rollins clinched the set, 25-18.
Set Two
- Set two saw the Crusaders hold a slim 13-12 lead before the Tars scored five straight to pull ahead, 17-13.
- Belmont Abbey kept things close, but Rollins took care of business, scoring the final three points to pull away for a 25-20 win.
Set Three
- The Crusaders held their largest lead of the match in set three, jumping out to an 11-6 advantage early on.
- Rollins used a 9-1 run, keyed by three service aces, to take the lead, 15-12.
- Belmont Abbey answered back with a 6-0 run to go up 18-15, but the Tars replied with an 8-1 rally that put the home side just two points away from victory at 23-19.
- Rollins gladly traded sideouts for the next four serves, winning the set by a score of 25-21 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
SHC 3, RC 0
Gerard led the Tars with 10 kills and collected 13 digs to record a double-double, while
Emily Diaz tallied nine kills. Horsley compiled a match-leading 26 assists and
Adriana Lopez picked up a match-best 22 digs.
Kassandra Fairly led Spring Hill (3-4) with 11 kills while Brooke Borgmeyer contributed eight kills. Emily Weinzapfel tied for the team lead with 15 digs to go along with seven kills, while Mikayla Boyler also tallied 15 digs. Jessica Fairly posted a double-double with 13 digs and a team-high 25 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins scored the first four points, three of which came on kills from Diaz.
- The Badgers went on a 9-2 run that put them in the lead, 13-9.
- Rollins came back late, going on a 5-1 run to pull within a point at 22-21, but Spring Hill captured three of the final four points for a 25-22 win.
Set Two
- Set two saw SHC run out to a 7-2 lead early.
- The Tars batted, and eventually used a 4-0 spurt that included two kills and two blocks from Begley to draw even at 19.
- Spring Hill took four of the next five to regain a 23-20 lead, and the Badgers held on for a 25-23 set victory.
Set Three
- Rollins took a quick 3-1 lead in the third, only to see Spring Hill score five straight to move ahead, 6-3.
- A Gerard kill brought the Tars back to level at 9-9.
- The Badgers scored eight of 10 points to turn a 10-10 tie into an 18-12 lead, which would allow them to stay comfortably in front en route to a 25-18 win and a 3-0 match victory.
