NAMPA, Idaho (August 27, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team wrapped up the Northwest Nazarene Tournament in Nampa, Idaho on Saturday, falling 3-1 to Texas A&M International before capping the weekend with its first victory of 2022, a 3-0 sweep of Emory & Henry.
TAMIU 3, RC 1
Lana Gerard led the Tars with 15 kills and 10 digs to register her first double-double of the season, while
Andie Baldridge (10 kills, 8 digs, .421 attack percentage) and
Emma Begley (10 kills, 4 blocks) also reached double-digit kills.
Natalie Horsley compiled a match-high 49 assists to go along with six digs and
Adriana Lopez collected nine digs for Rollins.
Megan Menchaca racked up a match-best 17 kills and hit .448 to go along with five blocks for the Dustdevils, while Guilia Horetlan posted a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Mackenzie Catalina also posted double-digit kills with 11 and Hannah Thompson tallied 11 blocks (one solo) and six kills. Emma Lade led Texas A&M International with 43 assists to go along with eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- The Dustdevils scored the first four points of the match and quickly built an 8-1 lead.
- A 5-2 spurt got the Tars back to within four (10-6), but TAMIU answered back with a 6-1 run to pull ahead, 16-7.
- Texas A&M International closed out the set by winning six of the final eight points to claim a 25-15 win.
Set Two
- An early 4-0 run put the Dustdevils in front, 9-5, and a 10-3 rally extended their lead to 21-11.
- Rollins scored four of the next five points, but TAMIU won the final three points of the set to win it, 25-15, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
- The Tars got the early jump in the third, taking an early 7-3 lead thanks to a pair of kills each from Baldridge and Begley.
- A service ace from Marta Tsaneva grew the lead to six points (14-8).
- After Texas A&M International cut the deficit to just three (16-13), Makayla Moran put down a kill that sparked a 5-1 run to put the Tars ahead, 21-14.
- Baldridge closed out the frame with a kill and a service ace on the final two points, putting the finishing touches on a 25-19 Rollins win.
Set Four
- The Dustdevils opened the fourth set winning five consecutive points and held an early 7-2 lead.
- The Tars chipped away, and a 5-1 rally midway through the set brought Rollins to within just two points at 18-16.
- Late in the frame, a Begley service ace cut the margin to a single point at 23-22.
- After exchanging sideouts, TAMIU got the final point that it needed to clinch the set, 25-23, and along with it, the match, 3-1.
RC 3, EHC 0
Emma Rome led all players with 13 kills and a .458 attack percentage, while Gerard tallied 12 kills and Begley added seven kills and a match-high five blocks. Lopez picked up a match-leading nine digs for the Tars while Horsley dished out a match-best 37 assists.
Brianna Hogan led the Wasps with seven kills and seven digs, while Payton Rolfsen had a team-high 16 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins scored the first two points of the match and very quickly ran out to a commanding 7-1 lead.
- Back-to-back kills from Tsaneva were part of a 4-0 run that pushed the lead to 15-6.
- Two straight Rome kills sparked the set-closing 8-1 run that was capped by back-to-back blocks from Begley, giving the Tars a 25-10 win.
Set Two
- Set two saw the Tars again score the first two points, though this time the Wasps kept it close early, tying things up at 4-4.
- Rollins slowly built an 11-7 advantage, only to see Emory & Henry fight to get back within a single point at 16-15.
- Gerard scored the next two points with a kill and a service ace, leading to a 4-0 run that increased the margin to five at 20-15.
- The two sides traded sideouts for the next eight points before a Begley service ace closed the door on a 25-19 set two victory.
Set Three
- The trend continued as Rollins scored points one and two in the third set, but EHC came back and used a 3-0 spurt to take its first lead of the match at 5-4.
- The Tars wasted no time in responding, rattling off six straight points that became the opening salvo of an 11-3 run that put Rollins in front, 15-7.
- A late 3-0 run expanded the difference to nine points (22-13) and Rollins cruised from there, winning the set by a 25-18 score to complete the 3-0 sweep.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will open the home portion of the 2022 schedule next weekend as they play host to the Rollins Invitational, which kicks off with a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 2. First up, the Tars will take on Mississippi College at 2 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. nightcap against the University of Charleston (WV).
