No. 20 Tars Claim South Region 2 Championship with 7-3 Win Over Lee

Rollins will face No. 1 Tampa in next weekend's South Super Regional

SAINT LEO, Fla. (May 22, 2022) – The 20th-ranked Rollins baseball team took down Lee for the second consecutive day, winning the South Region 2 Championship by a 7-3 score. The region title is the first for the Tars since 2004. Rollins (38-15) will now move on to take on No. 1 Tampa in the South Super Regional next weekend, while the Flames' (33-24) season comes to a close.

Jeslyn Whitehead went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs while Ryan Coleman was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Jared Herron finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and two runs batted in, and Adams Torres was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored.
 
Tate Stone-Frisina (8-1) got the win, allowing three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings, picking up three strikeouts while walking none. Austin Long collected his eighth save of the year, pitching three perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.
 
Isaac Quinones went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Flames, while Brandon Daniels was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sam Fulton (7-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings, striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
  • Jeslyn Whitehead opened the second with a base hit and took second on a wild pitch.
  • After Nick Santucci moved him to third with a flyout, Whitehead came home to score on a wild pitch to plate the first run of the game.
Third Inning
  • Jeslyn Whitehead made it 2-0 Tars with a sacrifice fly in the second, scoring Jared Herron.
     
  • Quinones got a run back for Lee with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning.
Fourth Inning
  • The Flames tied it up in the fourth on a Quinones sacrifice fly, knotting the game at 2-2.
Fifth Inning
  • Rollins re-took the lead in the fifth with a two-out solo home run off the bat of Torres.
Sixth Inning
  • A two-run single from Herron expanded the lead to 5-2 in the sixth.
     
  • Lee got a run back on a two-out RBI single from Quinones, making it a 5-3 game.
Ninth Inning
  • Chase Achuff opened the ninth with a base hit and Torres followed that with a double to put two runners in scoring position.
  • Jeslyn Whitehead wasted no time cashing those runs in, singling home both Tars to build the advantage to 7-3.
     
  • Long finished off his three perfect innings with a popout, groundout, and strikeout in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save and clinch the region championship for the Tars.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will make the trek along I-4 to Tampa to face the top-ranked Spartans in the South Super Regional next weekend. The opening game is slated for Friday, May 27, with game two and an if-necessary third game scheduled for Saturday, May 28. Game times have not yet been announced.
