No. 20 Tars Take First Game of South Super Regional at No. 2 Tampa

Rollins is now one win away from a trip to the NCAA II College World Series

TAMPA, Fla. (May 27, 2022) – The 20th-ranked Rollins baseball team used solid pitching and some timely hitting to pull off a 2-1 upset of second-ranked Tampa in the opening game of the NCAA II South Super Regional on Friday night. With the victory, the Tars (39-15) are now just one win away from a trip to the NCAA II College World Series, while the Spartans (44-12) will have to win two games on Saturday to advance.

Cameron Meehan went 2-for-3 with a walk and the game-winning solo home run, while Chase Achuff was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Jaylyn Whitehead (10-2) showed why he was the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Year, allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out four. Austin Long collected his ninth save, tossing two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out one.

Drew Ehrhard went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Dan Sullivan was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Spartans.

Michael Paul (8-5) took the loss, surrendering two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work, walking three and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
  • Jared Herron reached on a one-out single and moved up to second when Joey Rubin drew a walk.
  • Achuff then singled up the middle, scoring Herron with the game's first run.

  • The Spartans answered in their half of the fifth when Sullivan doubled home Ehrhard to tie the game at a run apiece.
Seventh Inning
  • Meehan un-tied the game when he led off the seventh with a long home run to left, which proved to be the decisive run in the ballgame.
Ninth Inning
  • Long pitched around a two-out walk in the ninth to close out the game, putting the Tars on the precipice of their first trip to the College World Series since 2004.
