Softball Shuts Out Barry Twice on Saturday

The Tars took the first game 8-0 in six innings and won the series finale, 3-0

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 9, 2022) – The Rollins softball team completed a series sweep of visiting Barry with a pair of shutout victories on Saturday, winning the opener 8-0 in six innings before taking the series finale, 3-0. The wins push the Tars to 23-6 on the season, 14-4 in SSC play, while the Bucs drop to 23-16, 10-8 in conference.

Game 1 – Rollins 8, Barry 0 (6 innings)

Raiven Bryant was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs, while Taylor Waters was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Grace Germer finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and Chelsea Peace was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI.

Emily MacMullen (10-2) went the distance, giving up just two hits and two walks in the six-inning complete game effort, striking out seven.

Becka Mellor was 1-for-3 and Mac Stone-Folmar was 1-for-2 with a double for Barry. Cassandra Lee started but did not record an out, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Haelee Angelico (3-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in five innings of work, walking one and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Ashley Troutman walked and stole second to open the bottom of the first.
  • Bryant singled to center to score Troutman with the game's first run.
  • Chelsea Peace then singled, moving Bryant to third.
  • Two batters later an RBI groundout from Tyler Jo Colby allowed Bryant to score to make it 2-0.
Second Inning
  • Bryant doubled the lead with a two-out, two-run double in the second, giving Rollins a 4-0 advantage.
Third Inning
  • A two-out single from Waters brought home Ashley Worrell to increase the gap to 5-0.
Sixth Inning
  • Grace Germer opened the sixth with a bunt single and took second on a throwing error.
  • Waters then singled, scoring Germer with Rollins' sixth run.
  • Three batters later, Bryant singled to push Waters to third.
  • Chelsea Peace then singled, scoring Waters and advancing Bryant to third.
  • During the next at-bat, Waters took off for second, and the throw from Barry catcher Payton Germer glanced off the second baseman's glove into center field, which gave Bryant the opportunity to trot home with the game-ending eighth run.

Game 2 – Rollins 3, Barry 0

Worrell went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Bryant was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Waters finished 1-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, and Troutman was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Worrell (11-3) pitched a gem of a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits, walking nobody and striking out 10.

Lee and Courtney Chisholm each went 1-for-2 for Barry. Maci Barnhart (15-9) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings, walking one and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • As they did in game one, Rollins struck for runs in the first to take an early lead.
  • Troutman led off with a bunt single and Bryant followed with a single that allowed Troutman to reach third base.
  • After Bryant stole second, Chelsea Peace was intentionally walked to load the bases.
  • Two pitches later, Worrell made that decision hurt as she laced a double to right-center that cleared the bases, giving Rollins a 3-0 lead in what turned out to be the only scoring play of the game.
Seventh Inning
  • The seventh inning was the only inning in which Barry put more than one runner on base.
  • Lee led off with a single and Berlin Colvin then reached on an error, putting two on with nobody out.
  • Worrell was able to get out of the jam rather quickly, inducing a 5-3 double play ball from the Payton Germer and then retiring Sofia Chamorro on a groundout to end the game.
