Tars Walk Off with Doubleheader Sweep

The Tars took a pair of shutout wins from the Eckerd Tritons at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 15, 2022) – The Tars took a pair of shutout wins from the Eckerd Tritons at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.  Both games saw lengthy weather delays, but Rollins remained composed to earn the 2-0 and 1-0 victories.  Rollins improves to 25-6 overall, and 16-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. Eckerd falls to 16-18, and 5-15 in conference action.

GAME ONE: Rollins 2, Eckerd 0
The Tars got a dominant defensive effort, holding the Tritons hitless with runners on base and turning a pair of double plays playing behind a complete game four hitter by Ashley Worrell.  The senior struck out seven to pick up her 12th win of the year.  Tyler Jo Colby led Rollins, going 2-3 at the plate, including a homerun and a pair of RBI.  Ashley Troutman also tallied a pair of hits in three at bats, while scoring a run for the Tars.

Brenna Lokeinsky led the Tritons with two in official two at bats. The freshman also stole a base in the outing.  Brielle Benefield picked up the loss in the circle for Eckerd, surrendering two runs on ten hits over six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • Ashley Troutman got the frame started for the Tars with a single to left center.
  • Rollins would proceed to load the bases with no outs, before Troutman would cross the plate on a one out single by Tyler Jo Colby.
Sixth Inning
  • Eckerd got the leadoff runner on base, as they looked to equalize, but Worrell shut down that idea, striking out the side in the top of the sixth.
  • Rollins got an insurance run, as Jo Colby lofted a solo homerun deep to center field.
Seventh Inning
  • Raiven Bryant fielded a grounder, tagged a runner headed to second base and flipped the ball to first for a game ending double play.
GAME TWO: Rollins 1, Eckerd 0
Emily MacMullen provided the Tars with another gem in the circle.  The freshman surrendered just one hit, and struck out seven, on her way to the shutout, complete game victory.  Offensively, Grace Germer paced the Tars with a pair of hits, including a double, and a stolen base. Chelsea Peace, Ashley Worrell, and Tyler Jo Colby each went 1-3.

Skylar Redish tallied the only Triton hit of the day.  Hannah Perkins starred for Eckerd, throwing 6.2 innings, giving up just five hits, and one, unearned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Seventh Inning
  • Tyler Jo Colby slapped a single into center field to get the leadoff runner on for Rollins.
  • After a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by Jaden Walker, Tristin Peace entered the game to run for Jo Colby.
  • Grace Germer was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Taylor Watters then came to the plate, and hit a grounder to shortstop.  The outfielder hustled down the line and forced a low throw from the Tritons.  The ball went just under the first baseman's glove, and Tristin Peace, who was running on the play, crossed home plate, all the way from second, for the game's only run.
UP NEXT:
The Tars and Tritons will finish their three game set with a single game tomorrow, Saturday, April 16. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
