MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (April 9, 2022) – The 10th-ranked Rollins baseball team split a doubleheader at Barry on Saturday, dropping the opening game but coming back to win the finale, giving the Tars a series win. The split puts Rollins at 25-10 on the season, 11-7 in SSC play, while Barry sits at 15-22, 6-12 in conference.
Game 1 – Barry 9, No. 10 Rollins 3
Nick Santucci went 2-for-4 in the first game with a home run and two runs scored, while
Parker Smith was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Justin Alintoff (5-3) took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings, walking four and striking out two.
Joe Stella was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs for Barry, while Ihosvany Castaneda finished 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Trevor Baker started for the Bucs, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings, walking three and striking out four. Jake Fishman (2-0) got the win in relief, tossing four hitless and scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
- The Bucs got on the board first as Omar Baldo scored on a throwing error in the third.
Fourth Inning
- Rollins responded with Smith's two-run home run in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead.
Fifth Inning
- Barry got two runs back in the fifth, scoring first on a Baldo groundout and then on a Stella single, giving the home team a 3-2 lead.
Sixth Inning
- Santucci homered to right to open the sixth, tying things at three.
- Kevin Noriega returned the favor, homering to open the bottom half of the frame to put the Bucs back on top, 4-3.
- Later in the inning, Barry would get back-to-back two-out, two-run doubles from Castaneda and Stella to expand its lead to 8-3.
Eighth Inning
- Another Stella RBI double made it 9-3 Barry in the eighth.
Ninth Inning
- The Tars could only muster a two-out walk from Andres Antonini in the ninth, falling by a score of 9-3.
Game 2 – No. 10 Rollins 5, Barry 3
Timothy Mira was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the second game, while
Chase Achuff was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Sam Tanous finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Santucci was 2-for-5 with a run scored, a stolen base, and an RBI.
Nick Berger started for Rollins, allowing a lone unearned run in four hitless innings, walking one and striking out four.
Austin Long (2-1) got the win in relief, giving up a run on one hit in 1.1 innings, walking one and striking out one. Achuff got his fifth save of the year, surrendering a run on three hits in the ninth with no walks and one strikeout.
David Vazquez went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for the Bucs, while Stella was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Mike Reagan started for Barry, giving up a run on six hits in 5.1 innings, walking two and striking out four. Danny Vazquez (1-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks in 0.1 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
- As they did in game one, Barry struck first with a run in the third, this time scoring on a wild pitch that came on the third strike of a strikeout.
Fifth Inning
- Achuff singled home Kyle Bullock with one out in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.
Eighth Inning
- Tanous drew a one-out walk to get a rally going in the eighth.
- Jeslyn Whitehead followed with a single, and Santucci singled after that, scoring Tanous to give the Tars a 2-1 lead.
- After a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, Smith was intentionally walked to load the bases.
- Two batters later, Bullock was hit by a pitch to push across another run.
- Mira then delivered a double to score two more Tars, making it a 5-1 game.
- Vazquez singled home Noriega with one out in the bottom of the frame, but a double play on the next at-bat ended the inning with Rollins leading 5-2.
Ninth Inning
- Achuff allowed three hits and a run to score in the ninth, but he got Noriega swinging to end the game with the potential tying run on base to secure the save and the 5-3 win.
UP NEXT:
The Tars return home on Tuesday, April 12 to host Florida Southern in a non-conference game that is slated to start at 5 p.m.
