No. 10 Rollins Uses Long Ball to Beat Florida Southern, 10-6

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2022) – The 10th-ranked Rollins baseball team slugged three home runs on Tuesday night to defeat visiting Florida Southern, 10-6, in a non-conference game. The win puts the Tars at 26-10 on the season, while the Mocs fall to 21-16.

Parker Smith finished 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, while Nick Santucci was 1-for-5 with a three-run home run. Jeslyn Whitehead tallied three hits in four at-bats, including a double, while also drawing a walk, driving in a run, and scoring three times.
 
Kieran Casey started for the Tars, allowing six runs (one earned) on three hits in three innings, walking two and striking out five. Five Tar relievers combined to allow just one hit and one walk over the final six innings, compiling five strikeouts. Alfredo Caraballo (3-2) got the win, tossing 1.2 perfect innings with one strikeout.
 
Jared DeSantolo finished 1-for-3 with a grand slam for the Mocs, while Nick Wells was 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Brant Brown started for FSC, surrendering four runs on three hits in 0.2 innings, walking two. Jake Curry (0-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of relief, walking three and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Wells, the second batter of the game, hit a solo home run to put the Mocs up 1-0 very quickly.
     
  • The Tars answered just as fast, with Joey Rubin leading off with a walk and Chase Achuff hitting a liner off the base umpire for an infield single.
  • Adams Torres was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
  • Jeslyn Whitehead delivered a base hit to left to score Rubin, tying the game at one.
  • Achuff then came home on a wild pitch, putting Rollins up 2-1.
  • Two batters later, Smith singled through the left side to score Torres and Whitehead, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Third Inning
  • The Mocs took advantage of an error and two walks to load the bases with two outs in the third.
  • Connor Berry reached on an infield single that plated a run, and DeSantolo followed with a grand slam to right that put FSC back in front, 6-4.
Fourth Inning
  • Jared Herron delivered a one-out solo home run in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, making it a 6-5 game.
Fifth Inning
  • Torres opened the fifth with a walk and Jeslyn Whitehead poked another single through the left side to put two on with no out.
  • Santucci drilled the next pitch over the right field wall for a three-run home run to put Rollins back on top, 8-6.
Eighth Inning
  • Smith added a pair of insurance runs with a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth to make it 10-6.
Ninth Inning
  • Austin Long came on to pitch the ninth, and after walking the leadoff man, he got a ground ball double play and then a routine groundout to end the game.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to St. Petersburg on Thursday for the first of a three-game SSC series at Eckerd. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
