No. 11 Tars Drop Series Opener at Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 14, 2022) – The 11th-ranked Rollins baseball suffered a 6-5 defeat at Eckerd on Thursday in the series opener between the two teams. The loss drops the Tars to 26-11 on the year, 11-8 in conference play, while the Tritons go to 15-18 overall, 8-8 in SSC games.

Joey Rubin went 4-for-5 with a stolen base, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Jeslyn Whitehead was 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Nick Santucci finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, and Jared Herron was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
 
Jaylyn Whitehead started for the Tars, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out four and walking none. Austin Long (2-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing a run on three hits and a walk without recording an out in the ninth.
 
Mitch Donofrio was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs for the Tritons, while Michael Ballard was 4-for-4 with a solo home run. Jacob Stipp started for Eckerd, giving up a run on nine hits in six innings of work, walking one and striking out four. Jake Andriole (2-1) got the win after blowing a save opportunity by giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • The Tritons took an early lead as Donofrio hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to make it 3-0 Eckerd.
Fifth Inning
  • Ballard connected for a solo homer in the fifth to extend the Triton lead to 4-0.
Sixth Inning
  • Jeslyn Whitehead opened the sixth with a double and Santucci brought him home with a base hit, cutting the lead to 4-1.
Seventh Inning
  • Torres delivered an RBI single in the seventh to make it a 4-2 game.
Eighth Inning
  • The Tars continued to chip away as Santucci launched a leadoff home run in the eighth to bring Rollins within a run at 4-3.
     
  • Donofrio answered in the bottom half with a leadoff home run of his own, extending Eckerd's lead to 5-3.
Ninth Inning
  • Rollins showed its resilience in the ninth as Herron led off with a double and Rubin followed with a single to score him, making it a 5-4 game.
  • Three batters later, Jeslyn Whitehead singled to score Rubin, tying the game at 5-5 with two outs in the ninth.
     
  • The Tritons got a leadoff single and then back-to-back bunt singles in the bottom of the ninth to load the bases with nobody out.
  • Dimerson Nunez then worked a walk to give Eckerd a 6-5 walk-off victory.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars and Tritons will wrap up this three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow in St. Petersburg. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
