MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (April 8, 2022) – The tenth-ranked Rollins baseball team got a quality start from
Jaylyn Whitehead and a pair of home runs to take down Barry, 7-2, in the series opener on Friday. The Tars improved to 24-9 on the season, 10-6 in SSC play, while the Bucs fell to 14-21, 5-11 in conference games.
Cameron Meehan was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs while
Ryan Coleman was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs scored, and a pair of RBIs.
Adams Torres finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and
Parker Smith was 1-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Jaylyn Whitehead (7-1) got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out five.
Austin Long pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, giving up just one hit and one walk while picking up one strikeout.
Danny Cunningham went 1-for-3 with a home run for the Bucs, while Joe Stella was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Arrison Perez (2-4) took the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings, walking three and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- Jeslyn Whitehead opened the second with a single to right.
- Three batters later, Coleman drew a four-pitch walk with two outs.
- Meehan drilled the very next pitch over the right-center field wall for a three-run home run.
Third Inning
- Cunningham got the Bucs on the board with a one-out solo homer.
- Later in the inning, Stella delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.
Fourth Inning
- Smith was the beneficiary of a Barry error, opening the inning by reaching on a dropped fly ball.
- Coleman made the error hurt, as he uncorked a two-run home run to right-center to extend the lead to 5-2.
Seventh Inning
- Chase Achuff opened the seventh with a double after an 11-pitch at-bat.
- Three batters later Nick Santucci drew a two-out walk.
- Smith then hit a 3-2 pitch to right-center for a double, scoring Achuff to make it 6-2.
Eighth Inning
- Joey Rubin started a two-out rally with a five-pitch walk, and Achuff followed suit with a five-pitch walk himself.
- Torres then lifted a single to left that allowed Rubin to come home, increasing the lead to 7-2.
Ninth Inning
- Long set down the Bucs in order in the ninth to close out the ballgame.
