WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 3, 2022) – The ninth-ranked Rollins baseball team struggled to put runs on the board on Sunday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Florida Southern by identical 2-1 scores. The losses drop the Tars to 23-9 overall and 9-6 in SSC play, while the Mocs improve to 18-15, 9-6 in conference games.
Game 1 – Florida Southern 2, No. 9 Rollins 1
Jared Herron went 2-for-4 with a home run while
Ryan Coleman was 2-for-4 and
Jeslyn Whitehead was 2-for-4 with a double.
Justin Alintoff (5-2) took the loss despite throwing a complete game, allowing just two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking none.
Duncan Hunter finished 2-for-3 with a home run for FSC, while Jeff Liquori was 1-for-4 with a home run.
Aric McAtee (4-1) got the win, surrendering a run on six hits in seven innings of work, walking one and striking out six. Ryan Langford earned his fifth save, giving up two hits and striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Liquori got the Mocs going early, hitting a leadoff opposite field home run on the first pitch of the game.
Third Inning
- Herron connected for a one-out solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the third to tie things up at a run apiece.
Fifth Inning
- Hunter hit the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left field wall just inside the foul pole to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead.
Ninth Inning
- Coleman led off the ninth with a base hit.
- Herron singled with one out to allow pinch runner Drew Howard to move to second.
- Langford was able to retire the next two batters to end the game.
Game 2 – Florida Southern 2, No. 9 Rollins 1
Cameron Meehan went 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Drew Howard finished 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.
Nick Berger (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings, walking one and striking out one.
Nathan Chevalier was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Hunter was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Dawson Lane (3-1) earned the win, giving up a run on five hits in six innings, walking three and striking out seven. Collin Camarigg got his first save of the year, giving up two hits in a scoreless ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fourth Inning
- The Mocs plated two runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of singles and a pair of walks, taking a 2-0 lead.
- Howard got the Tars on the board in the bottom half with a two-out single to deep shortstop; Meehan, who was on second base, sprinted home as Howard beat the throw at first base.
Eighth Inning
- The Tars threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but couldn't push across the tying run.
Ninth Inning
- Jeslyn Whitehead and Nick Santucci recorded back-to-back two-out singles to set up first-and-third in the bottom of the ninth.
- Santucci then stole second to give the Tars a chance to win the game with a base hit.
- Unfortunately for Rollins, Camarigg was able to induce a ground ball to end the game.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Miami Shores next weekend to take on Barry in a three-game conference series. First pitch for game one is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
