No. 11 Tars Claim Series with 6-2 Win Over Panthers

A four-run sixth proves to be the difference in the series clincher

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 24, 2022) – The 11th-ranked Rollins baseball team clinched a 2-1 series victory over Florida Tech on Sunday with a 6-2 win in the series finale. The win improves the Tars' season record to 31-12, 15-9 in conference play, while the Panthers fall to 29-18, 12-15 in SSC games.

Chase Achuff finished 3-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, and an RBI, while Parker Smith was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI. Kyle Bullock went 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Timothy Mira was 1-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored.

Nick Berger started for the Tars, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out three. Austin Long (3-2) got the win, tossing four shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk.

Brett Parrish was 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple, a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI for Florida Tech, while Alec Eldridge was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Noah Steckley went the first 4.2 innings for the Panthers, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, walking one and striking out one. Aiden Pryzdoda (2-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs on four hits in 0.2 innings, walking one and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fourth Inning
  • The Panthers got on the board first, using three hits to push across a pair of runs in the fourth.
Fifth Inning
  • A Joey Rubin two-out RBI single cut the lead in half in the fifth, and an infield single by Achuff pushed Mira across with the tying run, knotting the game at 2-2.
Sixth Inning
  • Jeslyn Whitehead was hit by the first pitch of the sixth, and Nick Santucci immediately followed by lacing a double to the left-center field gap. Whitehead tried to score on the play, but was cut down at the plate, though Santucci was able to advance to third on the throw.
  • Smith then drilled a single to left to score Santucci, putting the Tars up 3-2.
  • Two batters later, Bullock launched a two-run home run to left, increasing the lead to 5-2.
  • Two pitches after that, Mira lifted a solo shot over the left field wall to make it back-to-back home runs, building the lead to 6-2.
Ninth Inning
  • Long made sure the Panthers had no thoughts of a comeback, as he set down the final seven men he faced in a row to close out the 6-2 win.
