WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 26, 2022) – The 11th-ranked Rollins baseball team scored multiple runs in five of the first six innings en route to a 12-5 victory over visiting Eckerd in a non-conference game. The win lifts the Tars to 32-12 on the year, while the Tritons fall to 15-24.
Adams Torres finished a double away from hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a triple, a home run, two runs scored, and six RBIs, while
Parker Smith was 1-for-4 with a walk, a home run, and three RBIs.
Chase Achuff was 2-for-3 with two runs and four runs scored, while
Joey Rubin was 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
Ross Korosec started for the Tars, giving up two hits in a scoreless inning.
Ryan Murphy (1-0) got the win, tossing 1.1 shutout innings, giving up a lone hit while striking out two.
Ray Zhang,
Spencer Mangum,
Alfredo Caraballo,
Steven Swift, and
Michael Cullen combined for five shutout innings of relief, allowing a combined total of one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.
Michael Ballard went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run for the Tritons, while Jake Andriole was 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two RBIs.
Tyler Venditti started for Eckerd, surrendering four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings, walking two and striking out one. Payton McIntosh (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings, picking up three strikeouts and issuing one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Rubin led off with walk and moved to second on an Achuff single.
- Torres then singled to score Rubin with the first run of the game.
- Two batters later, Nick Santucci knocked in Achuff with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 Tars.
Third Inning
- The Tritons drew even on Ballard's two-run home run and took a 4-2 lead on a two-run double from Andriole.
- Achuff drew a one-out walk to spark a rally in the bottom half of the inning.
- Torres followed with a single to put runners at first and second.
- Jeslyn Whitehead then singled to left to score Achuff, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
- Santucci followed up with a base hit to nearly the same spot, allowing Torres to score to tie the game at four.
Fourth Inning
- Rubin drew a two-out walk and Achuff followed with a base hit to put two on with two out.
- Torres then ripped a triple to deep right-center, scoring both runners to put Rollins up 6-4.
Fifth Inning
- Santucci kicked off the fifth with a single and Smith then delivered a two-run home run to center field, pushing the lead to 8-4.
Sixth Inning
- Rubin hit the first pitch of the sixth for a base hit and Achuff followed that with a walk.
- Torres got his fourth hit of the game, launching a home run to left-center to increase the lead to 11-4.
- Jeslyn Whitehead then drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a groundout.
- Smith drove him in with an RBI groundout to make it 12-4.
Ninth Inning
- The Tritons used a pair of doubles to push across one run in the ninth off of Justin Driscoll, but he limited the damage to the one run as the Tars easily held on for a 12-5 win.
