WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 1, 2022) – It took three extra innings, but the ninth-ranked Rollins baseball team found a way to win on Friday, defeating visiting Florida Southern 2-1. The win improves the Tars' season mark to 23-7 overall, 9-4 in conference play, while the Mocs fall to 16-15, 7-6 in SSC games.
Parker Smith finished 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored and
Joey Rubin was 1-for-5 with an RBI.
Jaylyn Whitehead started for the Tars, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing just one run on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
Austin Long (1-1) pitched the final 4.2 innings, giving up only one walk, no runs or hits, and striking out three to earn the win.
Connor Berry went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored for FSC, while Jared DeSantolo was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Nathan Madej pitched the first five innings, giving up a run on four hits, walking three and striking out five. Ryan Langford (1-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering a run on one hit with a walk and one strikeout in three innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
- The Tars got on the board first in the fifth inning.
- Smith singled with one out and moved to second on a base hit by Jared Herron.
- Rubin then singled through the left side to score Smith with the first run of the game.
Sixth Inning
- The lead was short-lived, however, as Florida Southern responded in the next half-inning.
- Berry doubled with two outs and scored on DeSantolo's base hit to tie the game at one.
Twelfth Inning
- The score remained tied until Smith led off the bottom of the 12th inning with his sixth home run of the year, a solo blast just to the left of straightaway center field.
UP NEXT:
The Tars and Mocs will wrap up this series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. The second game of the series, originally slated for tomorrow, has been pushed back to Sunday to become part of that doubleheader due to anticipated inclement weather on Saturday.
