WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2022) – For the second straight day, the 16th-ranked Rollins baseball team threw a bullpen day, and for the second straight day, the bullpen tossed a shutout. The Tars defeated Concordia – St. Paul by a score of 6-0 to improve to 17-2, dropping the Golden Bears to 3-5 on the year.
Joey Rubin went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two stolen bases, two runs scored, and an RBI, while
Parker Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and an RBI.
Nick Santucci finished 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI, and
Chase Achuff was 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI.
Ray Zhang (1-0) started and picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings as the opener for the bullpen day, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Cameron Sorge,
Justin Driscoll,
Ryan Murphy, and
Steven Swift all combined to throw six shutout innings of relief, surrendering a combined three hits and four walks while striking out five.
Mason Wolf went 2-for-4 with a double to lead CSP offensively, while Brayden Roybal was 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base. Gavin Rusch (0-1) started and took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings, walking three and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Rubin led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch.
- After Achuff walked, Santucci grounded out to score Rubin with the game's first run.
- Two batters later, Smith doubled to score Jeslyn Whitehead to make it 2-0.
Third Inning
- The Tars used a two-out rally to add a third run in the third.
- Santucci drew a four-pitch walk with two outs and Jeslyn Whitehead followed with a single.
- Smith then reached on an infield single which loaded the bases.
- Ryan Coleman began his at-bat just before lightning caused a delay of one hour and 11 minutes. Once play resumed, he coaxed a walk to score Santucci.
Fourth Inning
- The Golden Bears threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs against Sorge.
- After falling behind Nick Thimsen 2-0, Sorge was able to induce a routine flyout to center field to end the inning.
Sixth Inning
- CSP again threatened in the six, loading the bases with only one out.
- Driscoll came out of the bullpen, and although he fell behind Justin McGuigan 3-1, he was able to get him to ground into an inning-ending 1-4-6-3 double play.
- The Tars added two more runs in their half of the inning.
- Rubin walked with one out, then stole second and moved to third on an errant throw by the catcher.
- Achuff promptly singled him home to make it 4-0.
- Santucci then ripped a single to right that was booted by the right fielder, allowing Achuff to come all the way around to score the Tars' fifth run.
Seventh Inning
- Another two-out rally led to another insurance run in the seventh.
- Sam Tanous singled with two outs and immediately stole second base.
- Rubin then dropped a base hit into right, scoring Tanous from second.
Ninth Inning
- Swift came on to pitch the ninth, and he retired all three batters he faced to end the game.
