WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2022) – The Rollins softball team took both ends of a doubleheader to complete a three-game series sweep of visiting Saint Leo on Saturday, coming back for a 5-4 win in game one before taking the finale, 1-0. The wins push the Tars to 18-5 overall and 9-3 in SSC play, while the Lions drop to 18-11, 7-8 in conference.
Game 1 – Rollins 5, Saint Leo 4
Tyler Jo Colby went 1-for-3 with a grand slam while
Jaden Walker was 2-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run.
Raiven Bryant finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and
Chelsea Peace was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Emily MacMullen started for Rollins, allowing four runs on four hits in two innings, walking none and striking out three.
Katie Eicher (1-0) got the win in relief, allowing just one hit and three walks to go along with two strikeouts in 3.2 scoreless innings.
Ashley Worrell tossed a perfect final 1.1 innings to earn her second save, picking up one strikeout.
Isabella Andujar was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run for Saint Leo, while Alexandra Hare finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Rachel Bean started for the Lions, giving up four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings, walking two and striking out one. Kayla Betts (6-5) took the loss, surrendering a run on one hit in 3.2 innings of relief, walking two and striking out a pair.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- The Lions sent all nine batters to the plate, scoring three times on three hits in the first inning.
Third Inning
- Andujar led off the third with a home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Ashley Troutman led off the bottom half with a hit-by-pitch, and Bryant and Chelsea Peace followed with singles to load the bases.
- Two batters later, Colby delivered a grand slam over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 4-4.
Sixth Inning
- Walker put the Tars on top for the first time with a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Seventh Inning
- Worrell retired the Lions in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Game 2 – Rollins 1, Saint Leo 0
Colby went 2-for-3 in the second game, while Troutman was 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI. Worrell (9-3) tossed her second complete game shutout of the series, giving up just three hits and a walk while striking out six.
Emily Pilon finished 1-for-2 with a double and Bean was 1-for-2 with a stolen base for the Lions. Morgan Shannon (5-4) took the loss, allowing a run in six innings on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
- The Lions got runners to second and third with two outs, but couldn't push across a run in the fifth.
- Rollins loaded the bases with two down in the fifth, but also couldn't get on the board.
Seventh Inning
- Grace Germer led off the bottom of the seventh with a hit by pitch.
- She promptly stole second and then moved to third on the throw.
- Troutman walked it off for the Tars with a base hit to score Germer with the lone run of the game.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Lakeland to take on Florida Southern in a three-game conference series next weekend. Game one is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1.
