WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 25, 2022) – The Rollins softball team got some solid pitching and timely hitting on Friday to defeat Saint Leo, 4-0, in the series opener. With the victory, the Tars now stand at 16-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 18-9, 7-6 in league games.
Ashley Troutman finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, a three-run home run, and a pair of runs scored, while
Jaden Walker was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Raiven Bryant went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Ashley Worrell (7-3) tossed her fourth shutout of the season, going the distance and allowing just three hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
Deanna Falciglia and Alexandra Hare each went 1-for-2 for Saint Leo. Morgan Shannon (5-3) took the loss, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings, walking two and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth Inning
- Troutman reached on an error to open the bottom of the fifth.
- Bryant then hit into a fielder's choice, but the second baseman muffed the throw at second base that would've retired Troutman, putting two runners on with nobody out.
- Two batters later, Worrell reached on another Saint Leo error that allowed Troutman to cross home plate with the first run of the game.
Sixth Inning
- Walker led off the sixth with a double that short-hopped the right field fence.
- After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Grace Germer drew a five-pitch walk to keep the inning alive.
- Two pitches later, Troutman launched a three-run home run over the center field fence to make it 4-0.
Seventh Inning
- Worrell closed out her complete game by retiring the Lions in order in the seventh.
