Tars Tame Lions in Doubleheader Sweep

The Tars picked up a pair of victories over No. 22 Georgian Court, 4-2 and 6-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2022) – The Tars picked up a pair of victories over No. 22 Georgian Court.  The Tars swept the non-conference doubleheader, taking game one 4-2, before winning the finale 6-2.  With the wins Rollins improves to 7-3 overall.  The Lions fall to 2-4 on the year.
 
GAME ONE: Rollins 4, Georgian Court 2
The top of the order starred for Rollins.  Leadoff hitter Ashley Troutman went 2-3 with a double, a stolen base, and run scored.  Raiven Bryant, second in the order, went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.  Chelsea Peace went 2-3, with three RBI, a homerun, and a run scored, batting out of the three hole.  Ashley Worrell picked up the win, allowing two runs, on just one hit, over 4.2 innings.  Emily MacMullen struck out five in 2.1 innings to earn the save.
 
Kaitlyn Stufft tallied the only hit for the Lions, a two run homerun.  Kiara Meikle also scored on the play after walking.  Mikayla Gilgert picked up the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits, over six innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Inning
  • A one out walk turned into an early 2-0 lead for the visitors when Stufft hit a homerun over the left field wall.
  • Rollins responded in the bottom of the frame.  Ashley Troutman started the inning with a leadoff double, and advanced to third on a beautiful bunt by Raiven Bryant.  Troutman eventually swiped home plate with smart base running.
  • Chelsea Peace gave the Tars the lead with a booming shot to centerfield, scoring Bryant.
Fifth Inning
  • The Lions threatened as a trio of walks loaded the bases with two outs.  Emily MacMullen came in to relieve Ashley Worrell, and struck out Meikle on three pitches to end the danger.
  • The Tars tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.  Bryant drove a double into left field, before coming home on a Chelsea Peace single.
Seventh Inning
  • MacMullen retired the side in order, including freezing Lipkins for a called third strike to end the contest.
GAME TWO: Rollins 6, Georgian Court 2
Tyler Jo Colby highlighted a balanced Tars offensive effort by going 3-4 with a homerun.  Chelsea Peace tallied a 2-4 outing, also hitting a long ball.  Ashley Worrell went 2-4, tallying one RBI, and one run scored.  Overall seven Tars got hits in the game.  Emily MacMullen got the win with 5.2 innings of shutout pitching.  Katie Eicher and Worrell combined to close out the game in relief.
 
Kiara Meikle, Alyssa Herrera, and Elisa Lopez each managed one hit for the Lions offensively.  Adriana Mungo tallied a pair of RBI.  Sarah Clancy is credited with the loss after giving up six runs, four earned, in a complete game effort.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Ashley Troutman laid down a bunt single to lead off the frame.  She would score on a throwing error after a single from Raiven Bryant.  Bryant would advance to third on the mistake.
  • Bryant scored on a Worrell groundout to second, making the score 2-0.
  • Tyler Jo Colby launched a two out homerun over the right center field fence, giving the Tars a 3-0 lead.
Second Inning
  • Reagan Raley would reach base on a one out walk, then come around to score on an error off a sharply hit Troutman ball to the shortstop.
Third Inning
  • Four straight singles earned the Tars another run.  Worrell started the streak with a ball through the left side.  Colby followed her teammate, with drive just out of reach of the shortstop, to put two runners on.  Taylor Waters knocked the Tars third straight hit into left field, before a run finally came across with Jaden Walker plating Worrell with a single down the left field line.
Fourth Inning
  • After MacMullen held the Lions hitless through four frames, Chelsea Peace skied a no-doubt shot over the centerfield wall to make the score 6-0.
Sixth Inning
  • After two quick outs the Lions put runners on second and third.
  • Katie Eicher made her first relief appearance of the year and struck out Stufft with a low breaking pitch to end the threat.
Seventh Inning
  • The Lions threatened again, putting runners on first and third with no outs.  Jadalyn Rodriguez then popped up to centerfield.  Jordan Mendolla tried to tag on the fly ball, but was thrown out by a laser from Taylor Waters.
  • Georgian Court would eventually find the plate, with a pair of walks and a Rollins error, making the score 2-0.
  • Ashley Worrell ended the hopes of a comeback when she struck out Meikle swinging to end the game. 
UP NEXT:
Rollins will travel to Boca Raton for a Sunshine State Conference series against Lynn.  Game one against the Fighting Knights is set for Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m.
