Tars Tripped Up in St. Petersburg

The Tars hung around No. 16 Eckerd early, but fell off late to drop an 82-58 decision on Florida’s west coast

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (February 9, 2022) – The Tars hung around No. 16 Eckerd early, but fell off late to drop an 82-58 decision on Florida's west coast.  Rollins drops to 5-16 overall and 2-14 is Sunshine State Conference play.  The Tritons improve to 16-2, while they sit at 12-4 in conference action.
 
Yoke Tassent paced the Tars with 12 points, going 4-8 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc.  Isabella Prada added nine points and Grace Alfieri contributed eight, both off the bench.  Tassent, Prada and Lucy Leen all grabbed four rebounds for Rollins.
 
Nicole Scales led all scorers with 22 points off the bench for Eckerd.  Lauryn Vieira and Sofia Persson each tallied 12 for the Tritons. Maya Price grabbed 10 boards, while Vieira dished out six assists, both game highs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • Yoke Tassent opened the scoring for Rollins with a three pointer.
  • The Tritons kept Rollins at a distance despite scores from Kalila Fambro and Shanelle Heredia, as Eckerd grew their lead to seven, at 16-9.
  • The Tars came back to tie the contest, 16-16, with three pointers from Grace Alfeiri and Niya Pluviose and an Asia Newsome free throw.
  • A late Eckerd bucket gave the Tritons a 18-16 lead at the first intermission.
Second Quarter
  • Niya Pluviose opened the quarter with a three pointer, and the Tars took the lead 19-18.
  • The Tritons went on an offensive tear, growing their lead to as much as 14 late in the quarter.
  • A shot from behind the arc from Alfieri cut the Tars' deficit to 11 entering halftime.
Third Quarter
  • The Tars got a pair of free throws from Shanelle Heredia and a layup from Kymora Westerfield to keep within striking distance early in the quarter.
  • Rollins went cold at the six minute mark, and the Tritons closed the third on an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach for Rollins entering the final period.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Tritons stuck first in the final quarter to grow their lead to 33.  The Tars responded with nine consecutive points, including a pair of scores from Isabella Prada, to make the tally 72-48.
  • The two teams traded baskets down the stretch, as Rollins never got closer than 21 in the final minutes.
