WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 12, 2022) – The Rollins women's basketball team used a good start and an even better finish to pick up a 70-57 win over Saint Leo on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Tars' season record to 6-16, 3-14 in SSC games, while the Lions fall to 15-8, 10-5 in league play.
Lucy Leen led all scorers with 24 points, going 7-of-10 from the field, including 6-of-9 from behind the arc.
Asia Newsome added 16 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench, while
Kymora Westerfield chipped in 10 points and a game-high four assists.
Maria Atanassov-Tomas grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in addition to scoring six points.
Amanda Ulrich led Saint Leo with 20 points while Alex Button added 13 points and Tori Lesko contributed 10 points and a team-high six boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Leen opened the scoring with a three just over a minute into the game.
- Another Leen three pushed the lead to 9-2 with 5:24 to play in the opening quarter.
- A pair of Newsome free throws increased the margin to nine (17-8) with 1:17 left in the period.
- Saint Leo scored the final five points of the quarter, trimming the deficit to 17-13.
Second Quarter
- The Lions continued to close the gap early in the second, eventually drawing even at 20 just over two minutes into the quarter.
- Rollins did a good job stemming the tide, and the Tars closed out the half on a quick 6-0 run to build the lead to 33-26 at the break.
Third Quarter
- Saint Leo kept things close in the third, eventually tying things at 40 with 3:21 left in the period.
- After a Yoke Tassent three put Rollins back on top, the Lions finished the quarter on a 6-0 spurt to pull ahead, 46-43.
Fourth Quarter
- The Tars wasted no time tying things up as Leen drilled a three on Rollins' first possession of the fourth.
- The score was tied at 52 at the midway point of the quarter.
- Niya Pluviose hit a jumper with 4:31 to go that gave Rollins the lead for good; the shot also sparked a quick 5-0 run that put the home team ahead 57-52 with 3:47 to play.
- The Tars continued to push, ending the game on what ended up being an 18-5 run to pull away for the 70-57 victory.
