WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 16, 2022) – The Rollins women's basketball team fell to the No. 21 Tampa Spartans by a score of 69-38 on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Tars to 6-17 overall and 3-15 in conference play, while the Spartans improve to 23-5, 14-3 in league games.
Maria Atanassov-Tomas led the Tars with 10 points and added four rebounds, while
Niya Pluviose tallied five points and five points.
Grace Alfieri also recorded five points and grabbed five rebounds.
Kayla Bonilla poured in a game-high 14 points and dished out a game-high six assists to go along with five rebounds for the Spartans. Dori Nagy also scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high 10 boards, while Aliyah Abney chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Tampa scored the first eight points of the game to jump out to an early lead.
- The Tars battled back, closing out the quarter on a 6-2 run keyed by four straight points from Caroline Swartz, trimming the deficit to 14-10.
Second Quarter
- A triple from Lucy Leen got Rollins within three points (18-15) with 6:24 left in the second.
- Tampa slowly pulled away over the rest of the quarter, building to a 32-21 lead at the break.
Third Quarter
- The Tars used an early 5-0 spurt to get within eight (34-26) in the first three minutes of the third.
- Tampa went on a late 8-2 run to earn its biggest lead of the night at 15 points (48-33) and the Spartans held a 48-35 advantage going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Rollins struggled from the field in the final 10 minutes, connecting on just one field goal out of 14 attempts.
- The Spartans outscored the Tars 21-3 in the fourth, pulling away for a 69-38 victory.
