Tars Nipped by Sailfish in Season Opener

Shorthanded Tars fall by one point at PBA

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 5, 2022) – A shorthanded Rollins men's tennis team fell by a score of 4-3 at Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The Tars started strong, winning the doubles point, but came up just short in singles play against the Sailfish.

COACH'S QUOTES:
"After being down early breaks in doubles we were very resilient and stormed back to win on courts one and two," Head Coach Jay Friedman said. "In singles they were just a bit too much for us today as we were shorthanded, dealing with some Covid-19. Overall it was a tough battle for the first match of the season."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Doubles
  • Denis Golubev and Andrea Brignacca were able to defeat Umberto Rosi and Jorge Santamaria with relative ease, winning 6-1 on court one.
  • Efe Comu and Mikkel Baumann secured the doubles point for the Tars with a 6-3 win over Roberto Binaghi and Luis Eduardo Platas.
Singles
  • PBA got the first three points in singles play with wins on courts six, two, and five as the first to finish, giving the Sailfish a 3-1 lead overall.
  • Fifth-ranked Golubev took down Rosi on court one, 6-1, 6-3, earning the second point of the day for Rollins.
  • Baumann fought hard on court four, but ultimately fell to Platas in the clinching match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
  • Comu battled hard against Santamaria and came out on top at number three singles, winning 7-5, 7-6 to pick up the third point of the day for the Tars.
