MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (February 5, 2022) – For the second time in the past two weeks, the Rollins men's basketball team pulled off an upset on the road against a top-25 opponent. Saturday, the Tars held on for an 80-75 win over No. 22 Barry, just 10 days after defeating No. 23 Embry-Riddle away from home. With the win, Rollins improves to 13-10 overall and 8-7 in league play, while Barry drops to 14-5, 9-5 against SSC opponents.
Hutton Yenor tallied a game-high 26 points to go along with four rebounds and a game-high six steals while
Sergey Grishaev poured in 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 21 minutes off the bench.
Cade Long posted 11 points and six assists and
Brooks Cluxton added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Kyle Marion scored seven points in addition to grabbing eight rebounds and handing out a game-high seven assists.
Justinas Marcinekevicius led the Bucs with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and collected a game-high 15 rebounds. Jake Kakar added 14 points and seven assists while Toru Dean scored 10 points. Michael Schaefer had seven points and grabbed 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
- Neither side was able to establish a lead larger than four points until an 8-0 run put Barry in front, 19-13, with 10:17 left in the half.
- Rollins chipped away, eventually tying things at 25 on a triple from Long with 5:08 to go in the period.
- After Barry retook the lead, the Tars used a 5-0 spurt to take a 32-31 lead with just over a minute to go.
- The Bucs briefly retook the lead, but Rollins got back in front quickly and held a 37-35 at the break.
Second Half
- Barry opened the second half on a 6-2 run to go up 41-39 in the first 1:26 of the half.
- The lead bounced back and forth three more times, including on a three by Yenor at the 15:10 mark that put Rollins ahead, 53-50.
- A Yenor layup with 9:35 to go extended the Tars' lead to 63-56.
- The Bucs scored 10 consecutive points over the span of 3:08, regaining a 66-63 lead with 6:27 left in the game.
- Rollins wasted little time going back in front, pulling ahead 68-66 on a triple by Marion with 5:06 on the clock.
- Barry eventually swung the lead back to its side with a free throw with 46 seconds left, giving the home team a 75-74 lead.
- The Tars buckled down defensively in the final minute, scoring the final six points of the game while limiting Barry to just three possessions - a missed three, a missed free throw, and a turnover.
- Rollins got clutch free throws from Dayton Gumm and Marion and a big layup from Cluxton in the closing seconds to come away with an 80-75 win.
