Rollins Bests Limestone in Top-15 Showdown

The No. 8 Tars dominated their stiffest test of the season, dispatching the No. 13 Limestone Saints 12-7, on the road

February 27, 2022 (Gaffney, S.C.) – The No. 8 Tars dominated their stiffest test of the season, dispatching the No. 13 Limestone Saints 12-7, on the road.  Rollins improves to 3-0 with the regional victory.  The Saints drop to 3-2 on the year.
 
Charlotte Gastonguay led Rollins with four goals, including three straight in the third period to help Rollins take control of the contest.  Liz Fahey added a hat trick for the Tars, while Emily Cumberland notched a pair of scores.  Charlotte Gastonguay also added a pair of assists, good for six total points. Caroline Gastonguay also dished out two helpers.  Rachel Schlesinger made six saves for the Tars, starring between the pipes.
 
Limestone was led by four goals from Elizabeth Muscella, while a trio of other Saints each added one score.  Muscella also added an assist, good for, a team high, five points. Teja Gallop and Madelyn DeSoto split time in goal for Limestone, combining for four saves.
 
The Tars defense held Limestone to just 21 shots and 13 attempts on net.  Rollins won the groundball battle 14-12.  The Tars also cleared the ball on 14-15 chances, while they held the Saints to just 11-15 on clearing opportunities.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • Paige Kienle started the scoring early, tallying off an assist from Charlotte Gastonguay.
  • The Saints drew level minutes later, but the Tars would respond, and pull ahead with goals from Liz Fahey and Emily Cumberland.
  • Limestone pulled one score back, and the two teams ended the first frame at 3-2.
Second Quarter
  • The Tars got on the board first with Claire Reist extending the Tars lead to 4-2.
  • The Saints managed just one goal in the period, coming at the halfway point, making the score 4-3.  Overall, Rachel Schlesinger made three saves to stifle Limestone over the 15 minutes.
  • The Gastonguay sisters combined to give Rollins a 5-3 halftime lead.  Charlotte finding the back of the net off an assist from Caroline.
Third Quarter
  • Limestone pulled back within one goal early in the second half.
  • A four goal run by the Tars, featuring a natural hat trick from Charlotte Gastonguay, ultimately put the game out of reach.  Charlotte Gastonguay scored, unassisted, to spark the run, at the 8:46 mark of the quarter.  She found the net again just 30 seconds later off an assist from her sister. Finally, she capped her run with a free position goal.
  • Caroline Gastonguay scored Rollins fourth consecutive goal off an assist from Claire Reist, before a late Saint goal made the tally 9-5, heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • Charlotte Gastonguay tallied her fourth on a free position shot, early in the period.
  • Liz Fahey completed her hat trick to balloon the Rollins advantage to six, at 11-5, just before the eight minute mark.
  • Cumberland continued to pour it on for Rollins, tallying her second goal on a free position opportunity, and growing the Tars lead to a game high, seven goals.
  • Limestone closed the game with a pair of late scores, but the Tars saw out the contest to remain unbeaten in 2022.
