ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (February 25, 2022) – Behind a solid pitching performance from
Jaylyn Whitehead and a strong offensive showing by
Jeslyn Whitehead, the 22nd-ranked Rollins baseball team won its seventh straight contest on Friday, defeating Flagler 8-1 in St. Augustine. The win improves the Tars' season record to 8-2, while the Saints fall to 5-7.
Jeslyn Whitehead finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while
Joey Rubin was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Chase Achuff was 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI, while
Adams Torres was 1-for-3 two RBIs and a run scored.
Jaylyn Whitehead (3-0) went six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine.
Austin Long earned his second save of the season, tossing the final three scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and a walk while picking up three strikeouts.
Ashton Thomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Saints, while Mason Gray went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Gage Voorhees (1-1) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, walking one and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- Jeslyn Whitehead opened the second with a base hit and Nick Santucci followed with a single that moved Whitehead to third.
- Parker Smith then hit a sac fly to center field that turned into a double play with Santucci being thrown out trying to advance to second, but Whitehead also came home to score the game's first run.
Third Inning
- Jared Herron singled with one out before Timothy Mira came in to pinch run for him.
- Rubin and Achuff followed with back-to-back singles, scoring Mira.
- Torres then squeeze bunted, scoring Rubin to make it 3-0 Tars.
- The Saints got one back in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single from Thomas.
Eighth Inning
- Achuff opened the eighth with a five-pitch walk and moved to second on a Torres sacrifice bunt.
- Jeslyn Whitehead delivered a single to left to score Achuff, giving Rollins a 4-1 lead.
Ninth Inning
- The Tars tacked on four insurance runs in the ninth, beginning with a four-pitch walk to Mira.
- Rubin then reached on a bunt single and Achuff followed with another four-pitch walk, loading the bases.
- Torres ripped the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a single that scored Mira.
- Jeslyn Whitehead kept the train moving, singling up the middle to score Achuff and Rubin. Torres also came home on the play thanks to a fielding error by the center fielder, increasing the lead to 8-1.
- Long hit a batter in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded that runner as he nailed down the save.
