Tars Bats Stymied in SSC Opener

The Tars dropped their Sunshine State Conference opener against Embry-Riddle on the road

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 18, 2022) – The Tars dropped their Sunshine State Conference opener, falling to 2-0, against Embry-Riddle on the road.  The Tars fall to 3-1 overall, and 0-1 in SSC action.  The Eagles improve to 3-3 overall, and pick up a win in their first conference action.
 
Rollins scattered four hits throughout the game, with Ashley Troutman, Tyler Jo Colby, Taylor Waters, and Lexi Moore each slapping singles.  Ashley Worrell tossed six innings, surrendering seven hits and a pair of earned runs, while striking out seven.
 
Mahaliyah Sandridge went 2-2 with a run scored, while Lauren Latoria and Reanne Drayton each tallied one hit and drove in a run.  Kelsi Collins earned the victory, tossing a scoreless complete game and striking out eight.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
  • Rollins put a pair of runners on base with one but could not bring any home.
  • Ashley Worrell retired the Eagles in order to keep the score knotted at 0-0
Fourth Inning
  • Rollins got the two leadoff batters on base, but were again unable to convert.
  • The Eagles were able to take the lead in the bottom of the frame.  Embry-Riddle manufactured the run, capping the inning with an RBI single from Drayton.
Sixth Inning
  • The Eagles doubled their lead in the bottom of the sixth.  A leadoff single came back to haunt Rollins when Sandridge scored on a Latoria base hit.
  • Embry-Riddle would go on to load the bases with one out, but Worrell got a groundout and strikeout to keep the game within reach heading into the final at bat.
Seventh Inning
  • Rollins put baserunners on second and third with two outs in their final at bats.  But, the Tars could not push a runner across the plate, as they fell in the series opener.
UP NEXT:
The Tars stay in Daytona Beach for doubleheader action tomorrow, Saturday, February 19.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
